A guide to working effectively with Jake

Hey,

This section is for all of the people who I end up collaborating with in some form.

The key to great relationships is navigating the interpersonal dynamics, and understanding each others strengths and weaknesses.

That is why I am creating this “Guide to working effectively with Jake”.

Strengthsfinder

Strengthsfinder is an amazing test to help you understand where you are strong. Here are my key strengths and traits.

  1. Achiever

  2. Futurist

  3. Ideation

  4. Activator

  5. Relator

What these strengths mean to me:

  • I like to come up with ideas about a bigger future and then immediately put them into action.

  • Where i struggle is on follow through, I loose interest once something is going and often want to turn to something else. That is why I need others to help me on follow thorugh.

  • I do best when I am in partnership one-on-one with others, or in very small intimate groups.

    • Large groups are not my thing. I enjoy one on one relationships.

Jake’s Unique Ability

Unique Ability is a process that goes beyond Strengthsfinder. You can read an article about it here: How understanding my Unique Ability changed my life.

Unique Ability Statement:

My unique ability is creating something new, lifelong learning, achieving things, connecting with others, thinking differently, and selling with integrity so that I can create freedom in life.

10 Best Unique Ability Habits

Creating - I love creating something out of nothing. From idea to action, I get a rush out of starting something new. I could create forever.

Think Differently - I step back and see the world differently. I see the system and use it when I want and avoid it as needed.

Selling - I am always selling. I don’t fear it and I look for opportunities everywhere.

Learning - I am committed to constant personal and professional growth. I am forever curious.

Achieving - I get shit done. Check it off a list. Put me on top of a leaderboard. I thrive off of finishing things and finishing ahead of others.

Integrity - I am true to my word and always do what is best for all parties. Integrity is key to life.

Taking Risks - I am not afraid to fail. Risks excite me to an extent. I don’t fear calculated risks and stay calm with a stoic mindset.

Connecting - I do well in one-on-one or very small intimate groups. I love deep connection and real talk.

Starting - Ideas are not enough. They must be put into action and I love those first steps of starting something new.

Efficiency - I find better and more efficient ways to do things by improving workflows.

Jake’s Values

  1. Expansion - Committed to life long learning, growth and improvement.

  2. Meaningful work - I do work that brings me meaning and purpose

  3. Integrity - Truth above all else.

Other tips for working with Jake:

  • Efficient Meetings - I like efficient meetings and get ancy and stressed when people take too many words to get to the point.

    • This means I have to be very conscious in conversations with people who are natural talkers and express their ideas by “thinking out loud”. Often, I end up having great working relationships with “think out louders” but it only comes after we both gain an understanding of each other’s personalities.

  • Starter - I am amazing at starting new things.

  • Repetition drains me - As soon as something becomes repetitive, I will often fail unless I delegate and assign it to someone else.

  • “I lean too far into the winds of risk” - At one point I said this randomly… and it deems to be quite true. I’m often comfortable with an unhealthy level of risk compared to others.

  • Stubborn - My intent focus on achieving what is in front of me can make me stubborn. This means I sometimes don’t hear great ideas when they are presented to me. Often, I come to the same conclusions on my own weeks later and my team says “Yeah, we told you that idea before”.

  • Odd working hours - I work at odd hours. Ideas often come to me on weekends, evenings, etc. I may reach out in random hours to you on a regular basis BUT I do NOT expect a response in odd hours. I’m a big fan of “Asynchronous communication” where we can communicate in our own schedules. So don’t take my Saturday, Sunday, or evening messages as urgent things you need to respond to.

  • I’m busy - I have a lot going on. I’m involved in multiple companies, and have a whole music side project that is picking up some momentum. So don’t take my short responses, or lack of engagement all of the time as anything personal.

  • I like investing in people and relationships - Whenever I see potential to help someone level up where they are at, or the value they are bringing to the world, I get excited. But someone has to show the genuine drive and excitement to level up, and be in line with a path where I can help them for it to really work.

  • I have LOTS of ideas, and I act on them quickly - My top strengths are futurist, ideation, and activator. That means I come up with ideas and put them into action RIGHT AWAY. I don’t sit on things… unless I need to. Instead, I go.

  • If you work with me, you will experience abrupt ideas and actions from me to move in new directions - I just go. I see an island and chart course. So when you work with me, you may often just get the next action or idea that is in my mind.

    • Hang on for the ride! I will take you somewere awesome!

  • If we are collaborating on a project - Poke me. Be proactive. Keep the project top of mind for me. The more you put in, the more I will put in.
