Automotive Recruiters: 13 Firms for Leadership and Specialist Hires

By , co-founder of Alpha Apex Group, one of the thirteen firms below

Published Updated 12 min read

An automotive leadership hire can change how a dealership serves customers, how a plant performs or how a supplier delivers to its clients. Finding that person takes a clear understanding of the job and access to candidates with relevant experience. A recruiter can help you reach those candidates and assess their fit.

This guide compares 13 automotive recruiters, headhunters and executive search firms for employers hiring leaders and specialists. It covers dealership management, manufacturing and mobility roles, and geographically focused services, with published terms and questions to help you decide whom to call.

Which automotive recruiters fit your hire?

Start with the group that matches the assignment, then compare role coverage: several firms serve both dealerships and manufacturers. Each firm's own pages describe recruiting for automotive employers in dealerships, manufacturing, supply or mobility. This is a shortlist, not a ranking or a complete market survey. OEM means original equipment manufacturer.

Coverage and role examples are the firms' own descriptions, recorded September 27 and October 3, 2026. Profile order matches the table.

How much do automotive recruiters charge?

Keller's page advertised an 18% success fee when read in September 2026. The other firms in the terms table publish a payment model or a guarantee rather than a percentage. These offers do not establish a comparable automotive fee range.

Five firms whose pages publish the terms below, captured September 27, 2026. Obtain the applicable fee, expenses, payment schedule, exclusivity, cancellation and replacement conditions in the proposal.

How do you compare automotive recruiters' proposals?

I'd define what the hire must accomplish, and the authority they will have to deliver it, before comparing proposals. Then compare each team's relevant assignments, assessment plan and delivery responsibilities against that same brief.

For a dealer-group CFO, ask for experience with vehicle inventory funding, service-and-parts profitability and finance-and-insurance economics. For a manufacturing CFO, examine working capital tied up in materials and production, plant costs and investment decisions. For a finance leadership hire, use these responsibilities to compare CFO executive search firms.

Request comparable assignments with the operating setting, starting position, result period and candidate's own contribution. For example, ask for a plant's scrap rate before a leader took responsibility and its change over the subsequent production year. Establish who will lead outreach, assess candidates and report progress, and how often you will receive updates. Then tailor the next question to the mandate:

  • Off-limits: Which target employers are unavailable because of your existing client relationships? Ask this before you share a target list.
  • Technical assessment: Who can evaluate the engineering specialty, and how will the assessment test relevant work? For a department leader, compare engineering executive search firms.
  • Discreet leadership search: Who controls disclosure of the employer's identity and the timing of references? Set the sequence before outreach using the steps in "How do you replace a dealership GM confidentially?" below.
  • Cross-border or China appointment: What local language, relocation and headquarters responsibilities belong in the role? Ginkgo's stated proposition is international companies hiring in China.

Write an automotive hiring brief

Specify the measures that matter to this appointment and the tradeoffs the person can make. A plant outcome might concern output, quality or cost; identify the baseline, target period and resources available instead of asking generally for better performance.

Automotive hiring brief

Complete the fields relevant to this role

Mandate
What result must the hire deliver, from what starting position and over what period?
Authority
Which sites, people, budgets and operating decisions will they control?
Dealership outcomes
How much overhead must service and parts cover, and which customer-satisfaction and finance-and-insurance results will this hire own? Include pay-plan constraints.
Manufacturing outcomes
Which launch, product-quality planning, production-part approval and plant-performance responsibilities belong to the role? Name the applicable customer requirements and quality systems.
Technical scope
Which specialty must the candidate demonstrate, and who can evaluate their work?
Hiring conditions
What location, travel, compensation and reporting arrangements can you offer?

When should you consider candidates from outside automotive?

Consider adjacent-sector candidates when their technical experience matches the mandate and you can establish how they will handle automotive operating requirements. Identify the launch, quality and OEM customer responsibilities that need direct experience; then test transferable software, battery or embedded-systems capability against the actual work. Keller's stated approach makes it one option to discuss for this search.

How do you replace a dealership GM confidentially?

Plan disclosure, interviews and transition responsibilities before candidate outreach. Automotive Search Group offers off-site interviews for confidential roles, while ARI describes succession planning; those services address different parts of a leadership change.

  1. Set the disclosure sequence

Agree which owner, board or HR representatives need to know, who authorizes outreach and when candidates may learn the dealership's identity. Include reference contacts in that plan.

  2. Arrange discreet assessment

Choose interview locations and communication channels with the recruiter. Off-site interviews can support discretion, but no process can promise absolute secrecy.

  3. Confirm the appointment and transition requirements

Check whether manufacturer approval applies to this franchise and role, who must obtain it and when. Agree the handover responsibilities and communication to the existing team before announcing the appointment.

How this list was made

Start with the group that matches the assignment, then compare role coverage: several firms serve both dealerships and manufacturers. Each firm's own pages describe recruiting for automotive employers in dealerships, manufacturing, supply or mobility. This is a shortlist, not a ranking or a complete market survey. OEM means original equipment manufacturer.
