19 Procurement Recruiters and Executive Search Firms

Hiring a procurement leader means deciding who will take responsibility for supplier relationships, sourcing decisions and the team that manages them. Before you choose a recruiter, be clear about the job: which sourcing and supplier decisions the leader will own, and how much authority they will need across finance, operations and the supply chain. A director who improves an established purchasing function needs different experience from a Chief Procurement Officer (CPO) who will reshape how the business buys, so look for recruiters with evidence at the level you need.
This guide compares 19 firms that recruit procurement and sourcing leaders, from specialist procurement headhunters to broader executive search firms and providers of interim support. It shows which firms show evidence of CPO searches, what the few published fees and timelines say, and what to settle before the first call. If you need a provider to run a sourcing project or manage procurement for you, look for advisory or managed services. ProcureAbility offers those services alongside recruitment; its profile below explains the options to discuss.

Which firms recruit Chief Procurement Officers?
On the pages read, four firms in this list have a service page specifically for Chief Procurement Officer search: Alpha Apex Group, Direct Recruiters, Keller Executive Search and SCM Talent Group. They differ in what surrounds the search: SCM also offers interim and fractional CPOs, Direct Recruiters offers retained, contingency and contract models, and Keller advertises sitewide fee terms.
Most of the others name the role within a wider procurement, supply chain or operations service; the table shows which. Heidrick & Struggles and Russell Reynolds show CPO-level work through named consultants and published research. ON Partners' and JMJ Phillip's evidence on the pages read stops at VP. Whichever firms you shortlist, ask for comparable procurement assignments and the consultant who would lead yours.

Lutzer Global
Back to the comparisonLutzer Global website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Procurement leadership in higher education, healthcare or indirect spend
Lutzer Global is a boutique retained search firm specializing in procurement, strategic sourcing and supply chain. Its named sectors include higher education, manufacturing, healthcare and indirect procurement. The firm says its founder has managed CPO, VP and executive director searches for clients including Harvard University, Yale University and Mayo Clinic.
Lutzer also offers a talent assessment of the existing procurement organization and recommends one before a leadership search: a gap in a spend category or process shows where the new CPO will need to excel. Consider that step if you know the team needs stronger leadership but have not settled which capabilities the hire must bring.

What do procurement executive search firms charge?
Two firms in this list publish fee percentages on the pages read: SCOPE, with a different rate for each search model, and Keller, with an 18% success fee advertised sitewide, including on its CPO page. Neither states the compensation the percentage is calculated on, and two firms' terms say little about what the other 17 charge. Ask each firm for its terms in writing.
| Firm and model | Published fee | Conditions to retain |
|---|---|---|
| SCOPE retained executive search | 18% | Described for director, VP, C-suite, confidential or highly specialized searches |
| SCOPE exclusive contingency | 20% | Requires an exclusive partnership for 30 days |
| SCOPE contingency | 25% | Fee payable only if SCOPE places a candidate |
| Keller sitewide success-fee offer | 18% | Advertises no upfront costs; CPO engagement applicability to confirm |
Replacement terms differ too. SCOPE's 90-day replacement guarantee is for entry- and mid-level roles: if the candidate leaves or does not meet expectations in that period, it restarts the search at no additional cost. Its FAQ says director and executive searches can include extended periods, tailored during the engagement discussion. Keller advertises up to 365 days of replacement coverage and says it contractually commits to replacing a hire who does not meet expectations. Confirm the period and conditions that will apply to your hire.
Before comparing percentages, ask every firm to define the fee base, payment milestones, expenses, cancellation terms and replacement remedy. Establish, for example, whether the fee is calculated on base salary alone or also on bonus and other compensation.
How long does a procurement executive search take?
One firm's published guidance puts a CPO-level search at roughly two to four months. The other figures are also the firms' own and mostly measure earlier milestones, so ask each firm for a dated schedule for your role and location.
SCOPE's July 20, 2026 article on supply chain search timing (opens in a new tab) says Chief Procurement Officer and similar executive searches typically run 60 to 120 days, with board involvement, complex compensation negotiation and extended notice periods adding weeks. It gives no sample behind that range and does not say clearly whether it ends at the signed offer or later.
SCOPE's procurement FAQ separately gives an average time-to-fill of 4.5 weeks, with a shortlist of vetted candidates typically delivered within two weeks of kickoff; it does not say which roles the average covers or what "fill" means. Keller's sitewide banners advertise first candidates in two to three weeks, and Optimum's procurement page says it will have a client interviewing within 10 business days. Neither of those is specific to CPO searches.
SCOPE says timelines vary with seniority, location, complexity and the availability of talent. Ask for separate dates for the shortlist, the accepted offer and the start date, and what would extend them.
How to choose the search partner
I would settle the job before comparing recruiters. Give each firm the same brief: the sourcing decisions the leader will own, the team's capabilities, the problems to address and the authority available to solve them. Then you can judge the proposed search against the work.
Define the procurement mandate
Name the spend categories, supplier markets, reporting line and geographic responsibilities. Explain what needs to improve and how you will recognize progress. If the appointment is confidential, agree on who can learn about the search and at what stage.
The reporting line often follows the remit. Russell Reynolds' July 29, 2024 procurement analysis describes two common patterns. A CPO who manages a larger indirect spend at a business that doesn't manufacture anything typically answers to the CFO. At a company that makes products or components, with procurement serving a large network of facilities, the CPO typically answers to the COO or CEO. Drawing on its own search and assessment work, the firm adds that CPOs in the second arrangement tend to be more strategic and focused on value.
Use those patterns as context for your own structure. Decide which spend the CPO will own and where their decisions meet finance, operations and supply chain, then give the search firm that map along with the job title. If the remit also runs into logistics and planning, compare logistics and supply chain recruiters as well.
Test relevant experience with real searches
Ask for comparable placements and client references, including the consultants' own roles in those assignments. Compare the hiring situation as well as the title: category responsibility, business scale, supplier geography and the extent of organizational change.
Agree with the recruiter how candidates' judgment will be assessed. One option is a short hypothetical case built on invented facts: a fictional single-source supplier of a critical component announces a steep price increase and warns that deliveries may slip. Finalists explain how they would weigh cost against continuity of supply, what they would negotiate and whom they would involve inside the business. Fictional inputs keep the exercise focused on the candidate's judgment and away from your live sourcing decisions.
Agree on delivery and responsibilities
Get the search stages in writing: market mapping, outreach, assessment, interviews and offer support. Agree on who runs the work day to day, what progress reports contain, when your team must give feedback and what happens if the search produces no suitable appointment.
