Environmental Engineering Recruiters: 11 Firms Compared

By

Published Updated 13 min read

An environmental engineer keeps projects permitted, compliant and on schedule. Whether the work is a remediation site, a stormwater program or a plant's air permit, the person you hire needs the technical training and the regulatory experience to deal with agencies and clients. A recruiter who works in the field can reach engineers who are not reading job ads and help you judge their regulatory experience.

This guide compares eleven recruiters that list environmental engineering, EHS or sustainability hiring as a service. It shows who each firm recruits, the evidence it publishes and the terms it states, then sets out what to agree before you sign.

DisclosureJake Jorgovan co-founded Alpha Apex Group, one of the eleven firms in this list.

Compare environmental engineering recruiters by the hire you need

The firms fall into three groups. Seven have a page or division dedicated to environmental hiring. Three are engineering recruiters that name environmental engineers among many other disciplines. One, Acre, recruits sustainability, ESG and EHS leaders and staff. Each firm's own pages, read on October 6, 2026, show a recruiting service for one of these hires. The list is not ranked, and other firms also recruit in this field.

If you are hiring in Southern California, check coverage on the first call. DAVRON's California page names Los Angeles and San Diego, and Enginuity lists Los Angeles among the West Coast cities it serves. Webuild's executive search page names San Francisco among the places it recruits for, and IWR's site footer lists Los Angeles among its regional areas. The other firms' pages read do not mention California.

Potential fit
Contract, contract-to-hire or permanent environmental and EHS staff across the US
Where it works
experience placing professionals in 100 US cities (its environmental page)

4 Corner's environmental page reports a 1.89 submit-to-hire ratio, a 1.39 interview-to-hire ratio and a 93% client retention rate, without saying how or over what period it measured them. Its homepage (opens in a new tab) gives the same 93% retention rate, and a 1.4-to-1 interview-to-hire ratio, as figures for the whole firm. The homepage also shows a 4.9 Google rating from 490+ reviews and a testimonial from an HR manager, "Matt j."; none of these is specific to environmental hiring.

The firm recruits for environmental engineering, EHS compliance, sustainability and ESG reporting. It offers contract, contract-to-hire and direct hire staffing, retained executive search, recruitment process outsourcing, and a lower-cost resume sourcing service that sends vetted resumes for you to pursue. On timing, its FAQ says only that the client management team sets out "all metrics and dates" at the start.

Potential fit
Environmental engineering hiring through a firm that also runs executive search in other functions

Alpha Apex Group's environmental engineering page carries a general client logo strip including Siemens, Skanska and ArcelorMittal. The page does not identify these as environmental engineering clients, and it names no environmental case, testimonial, fee or timeline. Ask for references from environmental searches like yours.

The page says the firm recruits environmental engineers and shapes each search around the project's technical and environmental requirements. It assesses candidates' engineering foundations and their approach to complex environmental problems, and it lists training and onboarding support for the people it places.

Potential fit
EHS and environmental engineering staff and leaders, from contract cover to executive search

CPS's about page (opens in a new tab) says over two-thirds of its client business comes from long-standing clients, a figure for the whole firm. Its EHS and environmental staffing page names no client, case or testimonial.

The division recruits environmental engineers, managers and specialists, EHS coordinators through global EHS directors and vice presidents, ESG specialists, and process safety and product stewardship roles. Its services are executive search, direct hire, contract-to-hire and contract staffing. CPS opened in 1973 to recruit for the chemical industry.

Potential fit
Environmental consulting, permitting and compliance staff, especially on the West Coast
Where it works
West Coast employers, including Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles; it reports placements from the West Coast to the Southeast
Evidence
the COSCO Fire Protection case study (opens in a new tab)

On its environmental page, Scott W., credited as a vice president at Landau Associates, says working with Enginuity is "like having my own in-house recruiter sitting in an office next to me". On the same page, a senior project manager at an unnamed environmental consulting firm says Enginuity found a stormwater engineer with municipal experience "in under three weeks". Three more environmental testimonials there are attributed by job title and type of firm only.

Enginuity's COSCO Fire Protection case study reports filling a regional safety manager role within 30 days of launching the search, after the client had spent more than seven months trying to fill it, with five candidates presented in the first week. It is a safety leadership hire, not an environmental engineering one.

The firm places environmental scientists, stormwater engineers and permitting specialists, up to principal environmental engineers and directors of environmental services. It says it screens for experience with NEPA, SEPA and the Clean Water Act, and says it has supported environmental hiring for government contracts, utilities, non-profits and private consultancies. It offers temp, temp-to-perm and contract staffing as well as direct hire and executive search, and its FAQ, read in October 2026, says it typically delivers pre-screened candidates within one to three weeks, depending on role complexity. The site uses two names: Enginuity Talent Group in its headings and Enginuity Advantage in its testimonials and case study.

Potential fit
Mid-level environmental services roles where a full executive search fee would be out of proportion

For more than a decade, IWR's environmental services page says, its team has placed environmental services professionals across the US. It names no client or placement metric, and none appear on the firm's other pages read.

The firm began as an offshoot of the executive search firm JMJ Phillip and describes itself as a recruiter for mid-level, non-executive positions. It says it recruits passive and active candidates without advertising the job online. Its roles run from field service technicians and water quality scientists to directors of environmental services. Its site footer lists flat fee recruiting and local contingent recruiting among its services, without published amounts.

Ask first
what does the flat fee cover, and what happens if no hire is made?

Potential fit
Professional engineers and engineers in training for environmental firms or public agencies, permanent or temporary
Evidence
its executive search page (opens in a new tab)

On an executive search page last updated in November 2024, Webuild reports completing "100's" of executive search engagements for commercial, consulting, governmental and non-profit organizations in the construction, engineering and environmental industries; the count covers all three. Its environmental engineering page says it has recruited professional engineers, engineers in training and support staff for government agencies and environmental and engineering firms.

The firm offers executive search on a contingency, retained or customized basis, and temporary staffing. Its process runs from job analysis and sourcing to interviews, references and offer negotiation. It lists 20 environmental engineering specialties, from water resources and air quality to remediation and environmental compliance, and provides background checks, OSHA medical screening and certification training where a role requires them.

Engineering recruiters that include environmental engineers

3 of 11 firms

These firms recruit across engineering and name environmental engineering as one discipline among many. Consider them when the role sits inside a wider engineering team, and ask how many environmental engineers they have placed.

Potential fit
An environmental engineer in California, with fee terms known before you start
Where it works
Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento and throughout California (its California page); the firm is based in Tampa
Published pricing
20% to 30% of annual salary in October 2026, depending on the payment plan

DAVRON's fee schedule (opens in a new tab) sets the fee by how you pay. A one-time payment is 21% of annual salary, due within 10 days of the start date, with a pro-rated credit toward the next search if the hire leaves in the first 90 days. Weekly plans cost 23%, 26% or 30%, spread over 13, 26 or 52 weeks, and invoicing stops if the hire leaves during the plan. Its retained priority search costs 20%, with a $5,000 initial retainer credited toward the fee and the balance invoiced over 13 weekly installments; invoicing stops if the hire leaves during that period. Its contingency search costs nothing unless you hire.

The firm recruits engineering, architecture, construction and manufacturing staff, and environmental engineers are one of more than 40 roles on its California page. On its testimonials page (opens in a new tab), a client signed S. Shoen says a candidate "has been a great addition to our Design Studio team", and M. Leeds credits a recruiter with the right hire "in the very competitive construction industry". Neither concerns an environmental role. DAVRON has recruited engineers since 1997.

Ask first
how many environmental engineers has it placed in your region, and which plan fits a hard-to-fill licensed role?

On DRI's homepage (opens in a new tab), Christian Stella, CEO and founder of Precision Medicine, says the Precision Medicine team has worked with DRI on high-level roles for two years. The testimonial does not say which roles, so it shows nothing specific about engineering searches.

DRI's engineering page lists environmental engineer among the engineering roles it places. It offers contingency search with no upfront fee, a performance-based executive search model it calls Direct Retention, and contract staffing. The firm has recruited since 1983.

Engineering hires in the Philadelphia and New York areas on contingency terms

Kane says it has placed "thousands of candidates" with engineering employers over the years, a figure across its engineering placements. One client review, from Steve M., credits it with "consistently high quality candidates in the NY and Philly metro area" for decades.

Its engineering page names environmental engineering within its chemical and civil engineering recruiting. Its process page (opens in a new tab) says most clients engage it on contingency, with no fee unless they hire, and that the fee and guarantee period are agreed before the search starts. It reports an average of two submitted candidates for every interview.

Evidence
the Crocs case study (opens in a new tab)

Acre's case study says Crocs retained it to search for a vice president of sustainability, a role meant to steer the brand toward net-zero carbon by 2030 and expected to report to the CEO. It names the person placed, Deanna Bratter, previously VP of sustainable development at Danone North America. The case shows no posted date and refers to Crocs' plans at the end of 2021, so ask how recent Acre's comparable searches are.

Acre has run executive search (opens in a new tab) since 2003 and includes a leadership assessment, a feedback session and onboarding coaching in each search. Its specialisms include corporate sustainability and ESG, ESG reporting, circular economy and waste, water stewardship, sustainable buildings and EHS (opens in a new tab). Its pages read do not name environmental engineering as a discipline.

Contract staff or a permanent hire?

Environmental work often arrives as projects: a remediation contract, a permitting backlog, a new monitoring program. When a project ends, a team built entirely of permanent hires has to find the next one quickly or carry the cost.

In my own business, we built a team structure to ride out ups and downs in revenue, which I described on the productize.co podcast in May 2025 (opens in a new tab). It had a full-time core and an hourly flex layer, so that a fall in revenue meant less hourly work instead of layoffs.

I'd apply the same thinking here. Hire permanently for the work you will always have, such as compliance programs and senior engineering judgment, and decide in advance how project peaks will be covered. Enginuity, 4 Corner, CPS, DAVRON, DRI and Webuild all list contract or temporary staffing alongside permanent hiring, and Acre lists interim and contract recruitment.

What to agree before you sign

  1. Write down the credentials and the regulations

Say whether the role needs a professional engineer license or engineer-in-training certification, and in which state, along with the permits and regulations the person will handle and who they report to. A stormwater engineer for a municipal client is a different search from a plant's EHS manager. If the hire is a senior engineering executive, compare engineering executive search firms.

  2. Ask for proof from roles like yours

Request references from clients who hired the same kind of environmental role at a similar level. A testimonial on a firm's site is one it chose to publish; a reference call lets you ask how long the search took and whether the hire stayed.

  3. Agree the terms in writing

Compare proposals on the fee basis, when each payment is due, what happens if the hire leaves early, and whether a quoted timeline ends at a shortlist, an accepted offer or a start date. For how search fees are usually set, see what executive search firms charge.

  • Which environmental roles have you filled in the past two years, and where?
  • Who will run the search day to day?
  • Is the search contingency, retained or a flat fee, and which pay counts toward the fee?
  • What happens if the hire leaves in the first months: a refund, a credit, a replacement or nothing?
  • Does your timeline end at candidates, an accepted offer or a start date?
  • Can you supply contract staff while the permanent search runs?
