Hedge Fund Recruiters: 12 Firms Compared by Hiring Need

By , co-founder of Alpha Apex Group, one of the twelve firms below

Published Updated 10 min read

Hiring for a hedge fund starts with a specific need: an investor who understands your strategy, a leader to run the business, or a specialist to strengthen risk and compliance. The recruiter needs to understand that role well enough to find suitable candidates and explain why they fit your fund.

This guide compares 12 hedge fund recruiters, headhunters and executive search firms by the work they describe on their own sites. It includes options for London hiring, explains where their services overlap, and gives you questions to use when choosing a search partner.

Compare hedge fund recruiters

Each firm's own pages name hedge fund recruitment or hedge funds among its client sectors. Start with the group closest to your hire: Finer, Glocap and several others cover roles in more than one category. The list groups firms by hiring need and provides no ranking of results.

Twelve firms grouped by hiring need, alphabetically within each group. Services and figures below are the firms' own accounts, captured September 27, 2026.

Alpha Apex Group website, captured October 2026.

Potential fit
Funds hiring analysts or executive leaders.

Alpha Apex Group reports 2,000+ successful candidate placements worldwide, a firm-wide figure that its private equity page repeats and that is not specific to hedge funds. Alpha Apex Group's hedge fund service covers analysts and executive leaders. The page describes starting with the fund's objectives, market position and required skills, then assessing candidates for experience, expertise and fit.

Which firms should you approach for a London hire?

For investment hiring, Dartmouth Partners has a London office and recruits for long/short and multi-asset hedge funds. It recruits across seniority levels, with a specialty in first investing seats. For compliance, legal, risk or operations, Rutherford describes a dedicated London hedge fund desk. Cameron Kennedy offers a broader financial services recruitment team based in London, with permanent and temporary hiring options.

If the search needs US candidates for a London role, Hudson Gate explicitly describes that service. In each case, ask who will conduct the search, where they recruit candidates, and which comparable London hires they have completed.

What should you put in the search brief?

I'd define success for the hire in one sentence before briefing any recruiter; I gave the same advice in 2022 about hiring an account strategist for my own business. Use that sentence to agree with each firm what the hire must accomplish and how you will judge it.

For an investment role, explain the strategy, research responsibilities, decision-making authority and how you intend to assess candidates' work. For an operating or control role, set out the responsibilities, reporting line and work shared with outside providers. Use the same brief with each firm so you can compare its proposed approach.

Hedge fund search brief

Complete before the first recruiter meeting

Role and reporting line
Who the person reports to and which decisions they own.
Required outcome
One sentence defining success, followed by how you will assess it.
Strategy and experience
Relevant markets, investment approach, technical skills and organization size.
Location and working arrangements
Where the person needs to work and whether relocation is possible.
Compensation parameters
The package you can offer and the approvals it requires.
Assessment
Who evaluates technical work, references and any claimed investment record.
Confidentiality
Who may know about the search and when the fund's name may be shared.
Timing
Desired start date, interview availability and any interim coverage needed.

How should you compare fees and timelines?

Fees were not published on the pages read. Ask for a written proposal covering the following terms; the guide to executive search fees provides further context for that discussion.

  • Fee calculation: If compensation-based, do salary, bonuses and sign-on payments count? What expenses or minimum charges apply?
  • Payment: When is each installment due, and what happens if the search is paused or canceled?
  • Replacement: If a candidate withdraws or leaves, what work is included, for how long and with which exclusions?
  • Access: What exclusivity is required, and which firms cannot be approached because of existing client relationships?
  • Start date: What notice periods, garden leave or other restrictions should counsel and the recruiter examine for this candidate?

For timing, distinguish the first candidate presentation, an accepted offer and the person's start date. Ask for dates against each milestone and how the plan accounts for your interview process and candidate availability.

Selby Jennings' hedge fund FAQ, captured in September 2026, gives a general estimate: a mid-level operations hire might take four to six weeks, while a senior portfolio manager search can take several months. It does not specify whether these estimates end at offer acceptance or the start date. Request a timetable for your role with those endpoints defined.

A good first meeting should leave you with a sharper brief and a clear account of how the firm will find and assess candidates. Decide whether to proceed based on the consultant's comparable hedge fund work, the proposed team and the written terms.
