Hiring a hospitality leader means trusting someone with the guest experience, the team and the performance of the business. A hotel general manager needs to bring those responsibilities together at one property. A restaurant-group executive or casino leader may face a different mix of operating, financial and regulatory demands.
A search partner should understand the business your new leader will run and help you assess candidates against its needs. This guide compares 21 hospitality executive search firms and recruiters, covering hotels, restaurants, clubs, leisure businesses and gaming. It explains their relevant services and gives you questions to use when choosing whom to brief.

Give each firm the same search brief
I would start with what the new leader needs to accomplish. For a property GM, describe the operating problems they will inherit and the standards they must maintain. When hiring a group executive, include their decisions across locations and authority to make changes.
A hospitality leadership search brief
Share the same brief with each potential search partner
- Business and role
- Property, group, ownership model and reporting line.
- Outcomes
- The operating or commercial improvements the new leader must deliver.
- Authority
- Decisions they can make, budget responsibility and required owner or brand approvals.
- Relevant experience
- Service level, scale, business model and market knowledge that matter for the work.
- Practical requirements
- Location, travel, relocation, compensation and desired start date.
- Assessment
- Examples, references and interview exercises that will demonstrate capability.
Set the brief before requesting proposals
Agree the outcomes and authority with the people who will judge the hire. Include the relationship between owner, operator and brand in a property search brief. For a GM appointment, use these general manager interview questions to develop the assessment.
Test the proposed consultant's experience
Ask them to walk through a comparable assignment: how they assessed candidates, handled difficulties and completed the hire. Request client references. A relevant assignment gives you more to discuss than the size of a candidate database.
Compare the plan against your workload
Compare candidate outreach and assessment for a single executive appointment. For several property vacancies, also compare how recruiters, interviews and start dates will be coordinated. Ask why the proposed engagement model suits that workload.
Agree fees, timing and replacement terms
Get a written proposal covering the work, fee basis, payment stages, expenses, cancellation and exclusivity. Separate included search services from optional compensation advice, assessment and onboarding. Agree who provides updates and post-placement support, and identify companies the firm cannot approach because of existing client relationships.
Alpha Apex Group, Bristol Associates and The Elliot Group describe retained search. Horizon's FAQ says there is no upfront cost to discuss a search and that some searches carry an engagement fee. CourtesyMasters says most assignments are exclusive or semi-exclusive under a signed agreement. For typical structures, see what executive search firms charge.
Compare timing in stages: first candidate presentation, accepted offer and start date. Horizon says, in guidance checked in October 2026, that most clients see qualified candidates within 7 to 12 days, while its typical kickoff-to-acceptance process takes five to eight weeks. Starts usually follow two to three weeks after acceptance. These are Horizon's stated expectations; role, location, interviews, notice periods and relocation can affect timing.
Horizon also describes a replacement search at no additional cost if a hire leaves within the agreed guarantee period; the agreement sets the terms. Ask each firm to specify the duration, qualifying circumstances and remedy. A replacement search, a fee credit and a refund are different commitments.
Plan licensing into a casino leadership hire
Confirm licensing requirements with the relevant regulator and your compliance team before setting a start date. The requirements can extend beyond the people directly running games.
For example, the New Jersey Casino Control Commission (opens in a new tab) requires a Casino Key Employee License for certain supervisory or decision-making roles. Its list includes hotel managers and food and beverage directors empowered to make discretionary decisions about an approved hotel's management. This is a New Jersey example; establish the rules that apply where your business operates.
Ask a gaming recruiter about comparable searches in your jurisdiction, candidate eligibility and any vendor approvals the firm needs. Include the approval process in your hiring plan alongside interviews and notice periods.
