14 HR Recruiters for Leadership and Specialist Hires

By

Published Updated 12 min read

Hiring an HR leader means deciding who will shape your people strategy, advise the executive team and build the HR function the business needs. Hiring a compensation analyst or an HRIS specialist calls for a different search. The firm you choose should be able to show relevant work at the level you need.

This guide compares fourteen HR recruiters and executive search firms by the roles they cover, the evidence they publish and the terms to settle before engaging them.

DisclosureJake Jorgovan co-founded Alpha Apex Group, one of the fourteen firms in this list.

Compare HR recruiters by the hire you need

The selection test is specific: each firm's own pages show it searching for or placing HR leaders or specialists through an HR practice or a service page dedicated to HR search or recruiting. This is a shortlist, without a ranking or a claim to cover the whole market. General staffing firms also fill HR roles: Adecco's US diversified-services page (opens in a new tab), read October 6, 2026, lists HR generalists, talent acquisition specialists, recruiters and learning and development managers among the jobs it fills, alongside call center and operations roles. Firms without an HR practice or a page dedicated to HR search or recruiting, on the pages read, fall outside this comparison. The groups indicate a useful starting point; capabilities overlap.

No firm publishes a fee percentage on the pages read on October 6, 2026. The final column distinguishes published engagement models from a fee basis you still need to agree. Use the executive search fee questions when comparing proposals.

What firms publish on the pages read on October 6, 2026. Within each group, firms naming an HR client, an HR buyer's testimonial or an HR case come first, then the rest; each part runs A to Z. Figures and terms are the firms' own claims. “Not stated” means not published on those pages. Remedies and timeline estimates, where published, are in the profiles; timelines end at different stages and are not market benchmarks.

Potential fit
HR leadership searches with named HR buyers to approach for references

TCG publishes testimonials from named HR leaders (opens in a new tab), including Belinda Hyde, identified as CHRO at SPX Flow, and Jeff Bettinger, identified as CHRO at NuSkin. Its executive HR service covers CHROs, VPs, directors and managers, with searches led by former HR executives.

The search page (opens in a new tab), read in October 2026, offers a refund of money paid, at the client's request, if TCG fails to deliver three candidates fitting the profile, plus a six-month replacement guarantee for placed candidates. Its homepage associates 45 to 60 days with searches completed in the first slate; the refund guarantee itself sets no deadline for delivering the three candidates. Put the deadline and eligibility conditions in the agreement.

Benson Executive Search website, captured October 2026.

Potential fit
A retained HR leadership search, including total rewards or compensation

Benson's anonymous testimonials (opens in a new tab) describe a CHRO hire for a global consumer brand and a head of talent acquisition search for an emerging biotech company. Its retained HR practice includes CHRO, CPO, total rewards and compensation roles.

Benson is part of Buffkin / Baker, whose acquisition announcement dated June 8, 2026 (opens in a new tab) says it will keep its name. On its Why Choose Us page (opens in a new tab), read in October 2026, the “Perfect Fit Guarantee” heading sits above a retention claim rather than a refund or replacement term: 98 percent of placed candidates still with their organizations two years later, a figure the same page later gives as 95%, with no method or placement count. Ask which entity contracts for the search and what, if anything, the guarantee commits to.

Potential fit
HR and people leadership searches within CAA's wider executive search service

CAA's page identifies its HR search capability through its 2024 acquisition of Hanold Associates HR Executive Search. It names total rewards, talent acquisition, compensation, talent management, learning and development, and labor relations among its recruitment areas. The page read contains no named client or placement result.

Its wider service covers functions beyond HR and includes leadership advisory and interim HR executive solutions. For an HR mandate, ask to meet the people who will conduct that search.

Buffkin / Baker

Buffkin / Baker website, captured October 2026.

Potential fit
Senior HR and people roles, including total rewards

Buffkin / Baker's HR & People page says practice leader Tom Wilson conducts HR leadership searches and names Alphabet, Intel and Northwestern Mutual among his notable clients; these are client names in a partner biography, and the page does not describe the searches or say when they took place. The firm reports over 3,500 completed searches for its Human Resources Practice across industry sectors. Its HR & People offering covers people operations, total rewards, learning and development, talent acquisition and HR business partners; team biographies also describe CHRO and CPO searches.

The firm acquired Gallagher's US executive search practice, including Frederickson Partners (opens in a new tab), in February 2025. Its HR & People page lists Alice Benson, Benson's founder, as a Partner & Practice Leader, and several team biographies describe joining Benson Executive Search, so a Benson proposal and a Buffkin / Baker HR proposal may come from the same team. Ask which partner leads the search.

Potential fit
A retained CHRO or CPO search with named HR cases to discuss

Cowen's case index (opens in a new tab) names SMS Holdings' CHRO search and Okland Construction's CPO placement. Its HR practice (opens in a new tab) covers compensation and benefits leaders, people operations, talent acquisition and organizational development, with senior partners leading searches.

The homepage's firm-wide counters report 99% retention and 96% success without defining the period or what counts as success. Its homepage also gives firm-wide averages of qualified slates three weeks from kickoff and placements within six weeks; a separate 38-day 'time to candidate' counter does not define its stage or how it relates to those milestones. The 365-day replacement guarantee also lacks conditions on the October 2026 pages read. Request HR-specific references and the written replacement terms.

Alpha Apex Group website, captured October 2026.

Potential fit
HR leadership or specialist hiring across talent, inclusion, technology and analytics

Alpha Apex reports 2,000+ placements worldwide across the firm; the pages read provide no HR-specific case. Its HR service covers strategic leadership, talent management, diversity and inclusion, and HR technology and analytics. Candidate vetting includes competency-based interviews, leadership assessments and reference checks.

Its separate timing claims in October 2026 are a 43-day average to fill full-time hires and 72 hours until candidates reach the hiring manager's inbox, with the latter's scope unstated. Neither is an HR-search promise. Agree the role, engagement model and terms directly; the page does not name CHRO as a role.

Potential fit
CHRO recruitment combined with assessment of the wider HR leadership team

Russell Reynolds describes an anonymous bank engagement in which it assessed internal candidates and benchmarked external talent for four HR leadership roles. It reports two internal appointments and two external hires, with all four roles delivered within six months.

The practice recruits CHROs, CPOs and senior specialists, including VP of Total Rewards. Its FAQ, read in October 2026, estimates 14 to 25 weeks from initiation to offer acceptance for its CHRO process. That endpoint excludes the new leader's notice period and start date.

DRI publishes a testimonial from Lindsay M. Bauer (opens in a new tab), identified as Human Resources Director at HealthMEDX, praising its understanding of the company and the candidates presented. The testimonial does not identify the roles filled. Its HR service (opens in a new tab) names compensation, benefits, HRIS, talent acquisition and labor relations, at manager, director, VP and CHRO levels.

Its contingency offer in October 2026 specifies no upfront fees and payment on successful placement. Retained search and contract staffing are separate options. Ask which model the proposed search uses and which compensation components determine the fee.

HR Personnel Services website, captured October 2026.

Potential fit
A provider offering HR executive search, direct hire and temporary cover

HR Personnel Services' recently filled searches (opens in a new tab) list completed direct-hire placements, anonymous and undated, including a CHRO at a media technology company, a compensation manager and HR managers in four industries. A separate testimonial is attributed to Nicole B. at Ralph Lauren about supplying candidates to its HR department, without identifying a hire. The firm says 80% of its searches come from returning clients, without a measurement period.

Its executive search page (opens in a new tab) says it focuses exclusively on HR positions, although its recently filled searches also list a plant manager, a card product manager and a financial manager. Its executive search page links to a retained executive placement service without stating its terms; the homepage also offers direct hire, contract and contract-to-hire. The October 2026 pages promise “100% guaranteed results” without stating a remedy or period, so get the terms for your chosen service.

The firm says 94% of its placements come from employed professionals and says clients receive the “top 7%” of candidates on average; these are its own sourcing and selection claims.

Who recruits compensation and benefits professionals?

For an analyst or manager, SSG and Korn Ferry explicitly name those levels. DRI and StevenDouglas also list compensation and benefits recruitment. HR Personnel Services lists completed Compensation Manager and Payroll & Benefits Manager placements, anonymous and undated.

For leadership roles:

  • Cowen: compensation and benefits leaders.
  • Benson: total rewards and compensation roles.
  • Buffkin / Baker: total rewards practice.
  • Spencer Stuart: compensation and benefits coverage.
  • Heidrick: heads of total rewards.
  • Russell Reynolds: VP of Total Rewards searches.

Compensation consultants who design pay are a different offer outside this comparison. For benefits advice, see the employee benefits consulting guide. For HRIS project delivery, compare HRIS implementation consultants.

What should you settle before starting the search?

I'd agree on the new leader's first 90 days before asking a search firm to find them. In Working Without Pants episode 180, published September 3, 2020, I recommended writing down what success looks like at 90 days, ideally before making the hire and at the latest during onboarding: “what are the criteria that this person needs to have achieved in 90 days out from now?” That advice was about helping a new hire succeed after joining. Applied to a search brief, the same outcomes give the hiring team and recruiter a concrete standard to assess candidates against.

  1. Define the role and the outcome

Agree the reporting line, decision authority, team and first 90-day priorities. For example, a hypothetical CHRO brief could require an agreed succession plan for critical roles. If you need leadership for part of the week, consider the fractional CHRO option before commissioning a permanent search.

  2. Compare relevant work and assessment methods

Request references for comparable roles in your industry and operating environment. Ask how the search team tests the candidate's ability to deliver your stated outcome, who performs reference checks and how progress will be reported. Use a wider executive recruiter comparison if the assignment covers several leadership functions.

  3. Agree the commercial terms and post-hire support

Compare written proposals against the same questions. A candidate slate, offer acceptance and start date are different milestones; a replacement and a refund are different remedies.

  • Fee basis: Which compensation components determine the fee, when is payment due, and which expenses are additional?
  • Remedy: Does the agreement promise a refund, replacement or credit, for what period, and under which conditions?
  • Evidence: What does each retention or success figure count, over what period, and for which searches?
  • Timeline: Does the estimate end at the first slate, accepted offer or start date, and what client decisions can delay it?
  • Support: Who handles onboarding follow-up, how long does that support last, and what happens if the hire leaves?
