Real Estate Executive Search Firms: 18 Recruiters Compared

By , co-founder of Alpha Apex Group, one of the 18 firms below

Published Updated 18 min read

A senior real estate hire shapes how your portfolio performs. A head of development decides which projects go ahead, an asset management leader decides what to hold and what to sell, and a CFO or CEO answers to investors through the next market cycle. A search firm that knows the sector can reach people who are not looking for a job and help you judge their record in strong and weak markets.

This guide compares 18 executive search firms, recruiters and headhunters that work for developers, REITs, investment managers, owner-operators and property management companies. It groups them by the kind of firm they are, shows the evidence each publishes for real estate searches and lists the fees, guarantees and timelines that a few of them state.

Compare real estate search firms

Every firm below recruits for real estate organizations, according to its own pages. The list has no ranking and does not cover the whole market. The groups describe each firm's main focus: real estate specialists, firms centered on development and construction, real estate practices inside wider search firms, and firms based outside the US. Several overlap.

18 real estate executive search firms and recruiters, grouped by firm type and A to Z within each group, as their own pages described them on October 6, 2026. The figures, client names and terms are the firms' own. "Not stated" means the pages read did not publish it.

An investor, developer or lender hiring development, capital markets or asset management leaders in the US
Where it works
clients across the US (its site)
Evidence
recent impactful hires (opens in a new tab)

Crown lists 14 "recent impactful hires" by title and location, among them a chief operating officer in West Chester, Pennsylvania, an SVP of capital markets in Dallas, a head of bridge lending in New York and a president of investments and development in Charleston. The list names no employers and gives no dates. Its open searches describe the clients, such as a developer of master-planned communities in Phoenix, without naming them.

The firm has recruited for real estate clients since 1996 and describes itself as a retained search firm. Its clients fall into three groups: investment and development firms, commercial real estate operators and service providers, and debt and equity providers such as banks, insurers and private equity. Its five-stage process runs from learning the business to helping draft the offer. The About page (opens in a new tab), read in October 2026, says it fills positions within an average of 60 to 90 days, without saying which stage that period ends at.

Potential fit
A commercial real estate owner or operator that wants an early read on candidates for mid-level and senior roles
Where it works
all 50 states (its site)

H Two National shows Colliers as a representative client, with no description of the work. Its CEO, Leo Turley, has conducted more than 5,000 searches over his career, the site says. The firm itself was established in 2018, after Huntington Partners, which he co-founded, was dissolved.

It recruits from mid-level to C-level across development, investment, syndication, finance, asset management, property management, leasing and human resources. In October 2026 the homepage said clients start hearing about qualified, interested candidates within 7 days and put the average recruiting cycle at 60 to 90 days, a period that includes the hire's notice period. For each search, it gives the client a mini salary survey for that role and market.

Morrow has recruited for real estate companies since 1978, for developers, owners, investors, fund managers and third-party providers, with searches completed in more than 32 states and 75+ metropolitan areas. The employers page (opens in a new tab) says repeat or referral business is over 80% of its search activity and offers references on request. The homepage shows 32 client logos, including AEW, Brookfield, Greystar, Hines, Related Companies and RXR Realty, and the placements page lists 24 roles by title and client type, such as a CFO for a senior housing company and a president for a multifamily developer-operator. Neither list gives dates.

Founded in 2001, the firm specializes in commercial real estate and recruits from entry level to executive management. Its process ends with a check-in with the client and the candidate at 30, 60 and 90 days. It also offers compensation analysis, organizational assessment and succession planning.

Potential fit
A commercial real estate investor or developer, especially around Washington, DC, hiring a senior leader
Where it works
offices in Washington, DC and Charlotte, North Carolina; it lists recruitment markets across the US

Maison's homepage describes three featured searches, two of them stated as retained: a senior vice president of design and construction for a public lodging REIT in the Washington area, a CFO for a commercial real estate investment and development family office, and an executive vice president to open a Mid-Atlantic office for a national developer that reports more than $8 billion and 75 million square feet developed. The clients are not named.

The firm says it focuses only on commercial real estate and was established in 2005. Its principals report more than 50 years of combined real estate and executive search experience. Its client types run from owner-operators and public-private partnerships to institutional advisors, management companies and mortgage and banking firms.

Evidence

Published pricing
fee based on the hire's total first-year compensation; retained searches pay one third of the estimated fee at the start and the rest 10 days after the hire starts

Real8 reports over 600 placements since it was founded in 2018 as a real estate recruiting firm. Its About page (opens in a new tab) lists recent placements by title and state, such as a CEO in affordable housing in Massachusetts and a regional vice president for affordable multifamily in New York, without naming clients. It says it has placed candidates in 43 of 50 states.

Its terms, as published in October 2026, are the fullest in this list. The search options page labels retained search the lower fee and contingent search the higher fee, without percentages. A retained search gets a dedicated recruiter at once and a six-month guarantee period. Contingent searches, offered on a selective basis, wait in a queue until a recruiter is free, carry a 60-day guarantee and are paid in full 10 days after the start. The pages do not say whether a guarantee means a replacement or a refund. The homepage says qualified candidates are typically presented within 2 weeks and that in 2025 candidates accepted offers in as few as 36 days. The second figure is the fastest case the firm reports.

SelectLeaders offers contingent and retained search for commercial real estate, from staff roles to C-suite placement, and reports 35+ years of experience. It also runs a real estate job board, and its sister company Bisnow covers commercial real estate news and events. It also recruits information security professionals. Its fee depends on the client's commitment, the search design, the number of positions and the length of the placement guarantee; no rate or guarantee length is given. A UK developer, property company or REIT hiring a director, managing director or non-executive director

retained fees are typically a percentage of first-year compensation, paid in three tranches (engagement, shortlist, appointment); no percentage stated (terms read October 2026)

Stone Executive's real estate page carries testimonials from Arthur Mann, regional land director at Miller Homes, and Liz Dean, HR director at Shepherd Building Group. Mann praises its approach, and Dean says it "understood our brief". Neither identifies the search or describes a placement outcome. The firm recruits across many industries. Most of its real estate assignments are at director, partner and senior leadership level: managing directors, development and regeneration directors, fund and asset managers, partners in surveying and advisory firms, and board chairs and non-executive directors at listed property companies and REITs.

Its firm-wide executive search page (opens in a new tab) gives a typical timeline with both end points: four to eight weeks from kickoff to offer, then two to three months before the candidate joins, depending on notice. Chief executive and chair searches often take longer, it says.

Write the role down before you call a firm

Crown, Keller Augusta, Trovato and Stone Executive all describe the first stage of a search as defining the role with the client. You will get better candidates, and a fairer comparison between firms, if you have answered that question before the first call.

I've made the mistake of meeting someone I liked and then working out how to fit them in. As I said on my podcast in 2020, "If you have a great person that doesn't fit within your organization, you're just setting yourself up for a disaster." Write the job first: what the person will be responsible for and what their week looks like. Then decide what they need to have achieved 90 days in.

For a real estate hire, that brief names the portfolio and property types, the projects or funds the person inherits, the investors and lenders they will face, and the decisions they will own in their first quarter. Give the same brief to every firm you speak to.

What to settle before you sign

  1. Match the firm to the sector and level

A multifamily operator hiring a regional vice president and a REIT board hiring a CEO need different firms. Check that the firm has worked in your property type and at your level, and ask how many of its recent searches were real estate. If the role is mainly a CFO search, compare CFO executive search firms as well. For project and site roles, construction recruiters may fit better.

  2. Ask for references from searches like yours

A testimonial shows what a firm chose to publish. Ask for two or three clients who hired at your level and in your sector, and call them. Firm-wide counts, such as total placements, describe the whole business. Judge a firm's network by whether it reaches the people this role needs.

  3. Agree the terms in writing

Compare proposals on the same points: the fee basis (base salary or total compensation), when each payment is due, what the guarantee covers and for how long, and where any timeline ends (first candidates, offer or start date). The guide to executive search fees explains the usual structures.

  • Which real estate searches at this level have you completed in the past two years, and can we speak to two of those clients?
  • Who will run the search day to day?
  • Is the search retained, contingent or exclusive, and what compensation counts toward the fee?
  • When is each payment due, and is any part refundable if we stop the search?
  • What happens if the hire leaves early: a replacement search, a refund or nothing, and for how long?
  • Where does your timeline stop: first candidates, an accepted offer or the hire's first day?
  • Which companies are off limits for you because they are your clients?
