Retail Recruiters and Executive Search Firms: 13 Options Compared

Published Updated 13 min read
A retail leadership hire needs to fit the way your business sells, serves customers and runs its stores. A chief merchant shaping the assortment has a different job from a regional leader improving execution across locations. The search firm needs to understand that difference well enough to find and assess the right candidates.
This guide compares 13 retail recruiters and executive search firms, covering field management, corporate leadership and board appointments. Use it to identify relevant firms, compare their published terms and prepare a brief that connects the hire to commercial results.

Which retail recruiters fit your level of hire?
For store, district and regional management, start with Bayside, Career Management, Frontline, Goodwin and Marc-Allen. For corporate, board and specialist appointments, see the second group of profiles below. The firms qualify through their own published retail recruiting services. This is a comparison by hiring need, not a ranking; provider figures are their own claims and fit recommendations are editorial judgments.

Retail executive search fees: Frontline's published pricing
Frontline prices direct hire against base salary and C-suite search against all-in compensation in its pricing examples, as read on September 28, 2026.
| Service | Fee | Compensation basis | Payment timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct hire | 20–30% | First-year base salary | After the candidate starts; no upfront retainer for most engagements |
| C-suite: contingency | 25–35% | First-year all-in compensation | On hire |
| C-suite: retained | 25–35% | First-year all-in compensation | A portion upfront; remainder in installments |
These are Frontline's own figures, not a market benchmark. Ask every firm for its fee basis and payment schedule in writing.
Its grocery and retail FAQ instead uses first-year total cash compensation for executive fees at 25–35%. That conflicts with the all-in basis on the pricing page. Have Frontline define the bonus and equity components, applicable payment milestones and any adjustment when the accepted package differs from the estimate.
Use each firm's written proposal to compare total cost, expenses and cancellation terms against the same brief. The guide to how executive search fees are calculated helps frame that comparison.
Compare replacement remedies
Compare what the firm will provide after a qualifying departure, alongside the duration of protection.
| Firm | Published term and remedy | Qualification to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Retail management recruiters: store, district and regional hires2 of 6 firms | ||
| Bayside Search Group | Extended guaranteed replacement period for engaged searches | No duration stated. Ask exactly how much longer the period is and what it covers. |
| Frontline Source Group | Five-year warranty for qualifying direct hire and executive search placements; declining credit toward a replacement or future placement, based on active service days | Excludes company-wide layoffs, business closures and material changes to the original role. The warranty for that role is fulfilled once a replacement is placed. Obtain the actual credit schedule and full exclusions. |
| Corporate leadership, board and specialist searches4 of 6 firms | ||
| Anthony Gregg Partnership (agp) | Free replacement if the candidate leaves within 12 months | Confirm departure eligibility and the replacement process. |
| Cowen Partners | 365-day replacement guarantee | Full conditions are not established by the homepage claim; request them in the proposal. |
| The Executive Suite | One-year executive performance guarantee | The page does not define the performance test or remedy. Have both specified. |
| Wolf Gugler Executive Search | One-year replacement guarantee | Full conditions were not shown in the captured homepage passage; request them. |
Frontline's retail page and a pricing FAQ also describe replacement at no additional fee, while its detailed warranty describes the declining credit above. Resolve that conflict in the agreement before valuing the cover.
How long does Frontline say grocery hiring takes?
Frontline's grocery FAQ, as read on September 28, 2026, gives typical fill times by role, from store management through senior executives. The same page promises a qualified shortlist within 14 business days, with weekly written updates through start date.
| Grocery role | Typical time to fill |
|---|---|
| Single-location store or department manager | 30–60 days |
| District manager or regional VP | 60–90 days |
| C-suite or senior grocery executive | 90–120 days |
Frontline says geography, compensation competitiveness and its existing grocery talent network affect timing. The FAQ does not define whether “filled” means an accepted offer or a start date. Request separate milestones for candidate presentation, interviews, acceptance and start, with your team's feedback obligations attached. Goodwin and Marc-Allen also list grocery capabilities; obtain their own schedules for the assignment. Bayside, Marc-Allen and The Executive Suite publish their own timing in the entries above, each measured to a different point.
Prepare the brief before selecting a search partner
I'd start by agreeing what the new leader must accomplish and what authority they will have. A recruiter can refine the brief, but the leadership team needs to agree on the problem the hire will solve.
Use the brief to agree the mandate, the firm questions to compare proposals and the assessment prompts to evaluate candidates. The guide to choosing an executive search firm helps structure the decision.
Retail leadership search brief
Give each prospective firm the same starting document.
- Role and reporting line
- Who reports to whom, and who makes the hiring decision?
- Business problem
- What change or result must the hire deliver?
- Retail model
- Which formats, categories, store footprint, online channels and ownership structure matter?
- Scope
- Which stores, regions, functions, teams, budgets and pricing decisions will the leader control?
- Success measures
- Which role-specific results below should improve, against what baseline and over what period?
- Relevant experience
- What must the candidate have done inside a retailer, and what supplier or other-channel experience can transfer?
- Location and travel
- What relocation constraints and market coverage apply?
- Compensation
- What base, bonus, equity and relocation budget can you offer?
- Internal candidates
- Who may be considered, and how will they be assessed alongside external candidates?
- Hiring plan
- Is this one appointment or repeated hiring across the store network?
Questions for each search firm
- Which comparable retail searches has the proposed team handled, and which clients can discuss that work?
- Which retailers are off limits because of existing client relationships?
- Who will run the search day to day, present candidates and stay involved through onboarding?
- What are the fee basis, payment schedule, expenses, cancellation terms and replacement conditions?
- What progress reports will we receive, and how quickly must we respond?
Assess the candidate's contribution to retail results
Select measures that match the authority in the brief. For each result, ask for the baseline, period, candidate's responsibility and trade-offs. Separate their decisions from changes in the wider business.
- Field leadership: How did comparable-store sales, shrink and labor as a share of sales change, and what happened to service and staffing?
- Merchandising: What changed in sell-through, markdowns and gross margin return on inventory (GMROI), the gross margin generated relative to inventory investment?
- Executive leadership: Which parts of the omnichannel profit and loss account did the candidate own, and which pricing, inventory or fulfillment decisions were theirs?
- Luxury retail: Where relevant, how did clienteling, full-price selling and brand stewardship inform the candidate's commercial decisions?
- Validation: Which former supervisors can explain the candidate's contribution and the trade-offs behind those results?
These are assessment prompts to adapt to the role, with no universal performance threshold. Choose a search team that can test the operating experience your mandate requires and explain how it will reach that candidate market.
