Tech Recruiters and Technology Executive Search Firms: 16 Compared

Published Updated 19 min read
A technology hire can change how your company builds, ships and protects its products. A CTO sets the technical direction for years. A run of developer or DevOps hires decides whether the roadmap moves this quarter. Either way, the recruiter you choose shapes who you get to meet.
The firms that call themselves tech recruiters or headhunters sell quite different things. Some run retained searches for technology executives. Others place engineers and IT staff on contract, contract-to-hire or permanent terms, and many do some of each. This guide compares 16 of them: what each offers, the fees and guarantees they publish and the technology hires they show, so you can choose the kind of firm first and then the firm.
Compare tech recruiters and technology executive search firms
Each firm's own technology, executive search, client, case-study and FAQ pages were read on October 6, 2026, and a firm is listed where they show a recruiting service for technology roles. The firms are not ranked, and many others recruit for these roles. For Python, Ruby on Rails or full stack developers, see the firms that name those skills in the section after the profiles.
The first group runs executive searches for technology leaders. The second recruits IT, engineering and developer talent, and most firms in it also run searches for technology executives, so the groups show each firm's main fit.

Caldwell
Back to the comparisonCaldwell website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A senior technology executive for a technology, telecom or IT services company
- Evidence
- testimonials (opens in a new tab)
Caldwell's testimonials page carries named comments from Michael Stoeckert, Chief Information Officer at Precision Medicine Group, who praises Shawn Banerji and the Caldwell team, and Vinesh Kolpe, VP of Information Technology at Lumeris, who calls Caldwell "by far the best" of the search firms he has worked with. Neither says which search it concerned or whether the speaker was the client or the candidate.
Its technology page covers the technology, internet, telecom and IT services industries and describes IT executive search for CIOs, CTOs, CISOs and senior VPs as retained work. The firm says it has completed thousands of executive assignments for these sectors since 1970, and that serving a select number of clients keeps it clear of the off-limits problems larger firms face. Shawn Banerji and Jim Bethmann lead the practice. No fee, guarantee or timeline appears on the pages read.
Cowen Partners
Back to the comparison- Potential fit
- A CIO, CTO or CISO search for a company with $50 million or more in revenue
- Evidence
- case studies (opens in a new tab)
- Published pricing
- fee not published; a process page promises "guaranteed success" without stating terms
Cowen Partners lists a Chief Information Officer search for Wesco, a paint and equipment supplier with over $1 billion in revenue, on a case-study page last updated in 2022. Its technology page lists recent placements by title and sector without client names, among them CTOs for a credit union, a cybersecurity company and a SaaS company, a CIO for a retailer and a CISO for a fintech company. Its clients page (opens in a new tab) shows logos including Spotify, OneStream Software, Infoblox, Remitly, T-Mobile and Adtran, without saying which roles it filled for them.
The retained firm reports more than 500 executive placements nationwide. It says its clients are typically companies with $50 million in revenue up to the Fortune 1000, and that candidate slates arrive an average of three weeks from kickoff. Its process page (opens in a new tab) says the final candidate is identified 90% of the time in the first 30 days and gives "as little as 6-9 weeks" for the whole search, with the later stages depending on the client.

Heidrick & Struggles
Back to the comparisonHeidrick & Struggles website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A global company hiring a chief AI, data, technology or information officer
Recent mandates on Heidrick's AI and technology officers page carry no client names: a chief AI officer for a global travel technology company, a chief technology, data and analytics officer for a consumer enterprise and a senior vice president of AI for a biopharma organization. It says Heidrick started the first global AI executive search practice in 2012.
The practice recruits CTOs, CIOs, chief digital, data and AI officers and CISOs, and also offers assessment and interim leaders. Its FAQ describes Heidrick as a retained search firm. No fee, guarantee or timeline appears on the page.
Keller Executive Search
Back to the comparisonKeller Executive Search website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A technology leadership search with a published fee and a long replacement period
- Published pricing
- 18% client success fee, base not stated; up to 365-day replacement coverage; no upfront costs
Nine technology placements appear on Keller's technology page, by title and employer type without client names. They include a CISO for a cybersecurity company, a CTO for an artificial intelligence developer, a VP of engineering for a fintech company and a CIO for an enterprise technology firm.
The terms above appeared on its approach page (opens in a new tab) in October 2026, with a shortlist typically within two to three weeks and a complete search in 30 to 60 days or longer. Keller marks each client's workforce off-limits for sourcing. The technology page calls the firm a retained technology executive search firm, while its homepage (opens in a new tab) describes it as contingent and retained, and the pages do not explain how the success fee fits a retained search. The homepage also reports that 92% of searches end in a hire, without defining the measure.

Korn Ferry
Back to the comparisonKorn Ferry website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A large organization hiring technology executives, or IT professionals at scale, through one firm
Korn Ferry's digital and technology recruiting page covers CIO, CTO, CISO and chief digital, data and product roles, and offers direct hire and interim IT recruitment for single hires and at scale. It says AI tools let candidates self-schedule and get feedback during the process.
Its executive search page (opens in a new tab) walks through a typical ten-step executive search that begins once a retainer is agreed, and says its consultants have recruited in 130 countries. Neither page names a technology client or describes a placement, and neither publishes a fee, so ask for references from technology searches.
Spencer Stuart
Back to the comparisonSpencer Stuart website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A chief information, technology or digital officer for a multinational or PE-backed company
Spencer Stuart reports more than 250 global assignments for senior technology leaders within a single year, across multinationals, medium-sized firms, startups and private equity-backed companies. The page does not say which year, and it names no clients.
Its Technology and Digital Officer practice, which began as what the firm calls the industry's first fully integrated global information officer practice, recruits and assesses chief digital, information, technology, data, product and information security officers. No fee, guarantee or timeline appears on the page.
The Good Search

- Potential fit
- A chief AI officer, CTO or CISO search with a flat fee agreed up front
- Evidence
- the Murmuration CTO search (opens in a new tab)
- Published pricing
- a flat fee it puts in the same range as a third of total cash compensation, usually reduced; minimum $75,000, paid in three equal installments; no guarantee stated
Emma Bloomberg, founder and CEO of the nonprofit Murmuration, credits Krista Bradford with its CTO search and names Heidi Williams as the hire, on a clients page published in 2026. The same page quotes clients at Intel and other technology companies without stating which roles were filled.
The firm describes itself as a retained executive search firm for technology and AI leaders. Its fees page (opens in a new tab) gave the terms above in October 2026: a flat fee that does not rise with the candidate's pay, installments at kickoff, 30 days and 60 days, an export of the search research at the end and no global off-limits restrictions. Its FAQ (opens in a new tab) says the firm delivers the winning candidate in 9 to 18 business days on average, without saying whether that ends at a presented candidate or an accepted offer. It separately gives 8 to 16 weeks from engagement to accepted offer for a typical retained C-suite technology search. Its case-studies page describes a president search at an advertising agency.

Alpha Apex Group
Back to the comparisonCo-founded by Jake Jorgovan, the author
Alpha Apex Group website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Technology leadership searches and specialist technical hiring through one firm that also recruits outside technology
On its technology page in October 2026, Alpha Apex Group reported 2,000+ placements worldwide, a 43-day average time to fill full-time hires and new candidates in the hiring manager's inbox within 72 hours, counted from an unstated point. The page does not tie these figures to technology roles, and its logo strip (AWS, Meta, Semrush and Zendesk among them) does not say which services those clients used. No technology case, fee or guarantee appears on the pages read.
The same page offers technology executive search and specialist talent pipelines, naming CTO and CIO roles (its IT executive search page (opens in a new tab) adds CISOs), VPs and directors, and technical staffing for engineers, software developers, architects, IT specialists and Salesforce talent. Its CTO search page (opens in a new tab) calls retained executive search its cornerstone solution for CTO hires, and its contingent workforce page (opens in a new tab) covers project, seasonal and project-to-permanent staffing.
Insight Global
Back to the comparisonInsight Global website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A large employer filling many developer, DevOps or security roles, with contract or permanent options
- Published pricing
- $0 upfront costs for direct placement; a guarantee period tailored to each client, length not stated
Insight Global reports 60K+ placements each year and 800+ Fortune 1000 customers across the firm, and its IT page shows client logos including Google, Meta, Oracle and Snowflake without tying them to roles. Its featured case study is an AI consulting engagement, a separate service from recruiting.
The firm places developers, DevOps engineers, cybersecurity, AI and QA professionals on contract and through direct placement (opens in a new tab), and its executive search page (opens in a new tab) covers full-time, interim and fractional leaders from director to C-suite. Its direct-placement FAQ said in October 2026 that it typically identifies and screens candidates in 24 to 48 hours, depending on interview availability and decision-making, and that interviews through a start date usually take one to three weeks.

Motion Recruitment
Back to the comparisonMotion Recruitment website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Contract or permanent engineers in a specific discipline, from a firm organized by technology
Motion's employers page links six anonymous case studies, including technical leadership for a global rideshare company in Silicon Valley and senior software developers for a Fortune 10 retail company. It reports a 92% candidate offer acceptance rate and a 95% contract completion rate, without saying how or over what period they are measured.
The firm organizes its teams by discipline: software, mobile, data, infrastructure, cybersecurity, product and UX, telecom and embedded systems. It offers IT staffing, managed project work, permanent hiring and IT executive search for VP-level and C-suite roles. Its New York page (opens in a new tab) says the firm has worked in IT staffing for over 30 years, matching mid to senior level candidates. No fee or guarantee appears on the pages read.
Next Step Systems
Back to the comparisonNext Step Systems website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A permanent IT hire on contingency terms, from developers to a CIO or CTO
Next Step Systems recruits on contingency: its How We Work page (opens in a new tab) says it is "only owed a fee if you hire one of our candidates", and it places IT professionals in full-time permanent roles across the US. Its homepage lists roles from project managers and IT managers to directors, CIOs and CTOs, and skills from software engineering and cybersecurity to cloud and AI.
The Chicago-area firm says it started in 1995 as a local recruiter and later expanded to clients nationwide. Its sites name no client, placement or testimonial on the pages read, and publish no fee percentage or guarantee, so ask for references from recent placements at your level.
Nexus IT Group
Back to the comparisonNexus IT Group website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A CIO or CTO search, or engineers on contract or permanent terms, with a published startup fee
- Evidence
- case studies (opens in a new tab)
- Published pricing
- 22% to 25% of first-year base salary on its startup practice page; no guarantee stated
Nexus's case studies include a confidential national search for the CIO of a Fortune 500 insurance company, which shortlisted sitting Fortune 500 CIOs and placed a leader for a 500-person global IT organization. It is one of 43 anonymous case summaries on the page, most of them for engineering and IT roles. One describes a senior DevOps engineer backfilled in 18 days from four submittals; another, a legal tech startup's first full stack engineer placed four weeks after the search began.
The firm runs retained IT executive searches for CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, chief data officers and VPs, plus direct hire and contract staffing in which Nexus is the W2 employer. If you end a contract-to-hire engagement, its contract services page (opens in a new tab) says no further fees are owed. Its startup practice page (opens in a new tab) gave the fee above in October 2026 and promises a vetted shortlist for direct hires within four days of taking the requirement. The startup page reports a 96.08% quality-of-hire ratio for that team, counting contractors who complete their contract and direct hires still with the client after six months; the contract page puts contract placements at 94.3%.
- Ask first
- whether the startup fee applies outside that practice, and what happens if a permanent hire leaves early.

Robert Half
Back to the comparisonRobert Half website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Contract or full-time developers, data and infrastructure staff through local offices
Five anonymous cases on Robert Half's technology page include 18 candidates with Workday experience presented to an accounting firm for a yearlong migration, and a network engineer search for an entertainment company that had been searching unsuccessfully for a year. Its FAQ cites its 2023 customer loyalty survey, in which 90% of clients recommended its services.
The firm offers contract, full-time and project staffing for software, security, AI and data, cloud and enterprise systems roles, and lists retained executive search for senior leaders. The page said in October 2026 that it can often help you hire "in as little as 48 hours" and reports 300+ locations worldwide. No fee or guarantee appears on the pages read.
Scion Technology
Back to the comparisonScion Technology website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Contract or direct-hire technical staff in the US, with a stated guarantee on permanent placements
- Published pricing
- a three-month service guarantee on executive search and direct-hire placements; remedy and conditions not stated
Scion's homepage testimonials include Gary Lugtu of Phacil, Inc., praising a Scion associate who joined his team, and an HR director in the technology sector, unnamed. None describes a technology leadership search. A clients archive on the site, with entries posted in October 2024, lists names such as Kaiser Permanente and DataKind without saying which service or Scion division each used.
The firm offers contract IT, engineering and AI staffing, direct-hire tech recruiting (opens in a new tab) and an executive search service (opens in a new tab) for roles from CTO and CIO to CISO and chief data officer. The direct-hire page stated the guarantee above in October 2026, with a 98%+ success rate in long-term placements that it does not define. Scion says it has recruited for US companies since 2006.

Sparks Group
Back to the comparison- Potential fit
- Contract-to-hire or permanent IT staff for a company in the Mid-Atlantic or hiring remotely
- Published pricing
- customized by role, skill level and service model; employers typically pay only when a placement is made
A vice president of professional services at a business intelligence solutions firm says Sparks staffed "a critical technical position" for one of its clients, in one of the anonymous testimonials on its client testimonials page (opens in a new tab). Others come from IT services and consulting firms.
Sparks recruits help desk, systems administration, cybersecurity, engineering, software development and IT project management staff on contract, contract-to-hire and direct-hire terms. Its employer FAQ (opens in a new tab) said in October 2026 that it can often present candidates within 24 to 72 hours for common roles and will find a replacement at no additional cost, depending on the service agreement. The firm is headquartered in Rockville, Maryland, recruits across several industries besides IT and serves clients nationwide.
Tier2Tek Staffing
Back to the comparisonTier2Tek Staffing website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A permanent developer or IT hire on a published contingency fee
- Published pricing
- 18% of first-year base salary, paid only when you hire; 90-day replacement guarantee, subject to the recruiting agreement
Among the positions Tier2Tek's homepage says it has filled is a bilingual IT support technician for an insurance company; its other featured hires are CAD drafters and survey staff. It names no technology client.
Tier2Tek recruits nationwide for direct hire only, and its homepage lists software developers, systems administrators, network and cloud engineers, cybersecurity specialists and IT support among the roles it fills. Its Python and Ruby on Rails pages, read in October 2026, described how it assessed developers on architecture, deployment and production troubleshooting rather than coding tests alone. The homepage gave the fee and guarantee above in October 2026 and says it can present candidates in one to three business days.
- Ask first
- what the replacement guarantee requires of you, and which software searches it has filled recently.

Hiring Python, Ruby on Rails or full stack developers
Several firms above name these skills. Tier2Tek described Python and Ruby on Rails recruiting on the specialist pages read in October 2026. Next Step Systems lists Python and Ruby on Rails among the technologies it recruits for permanent roles. Motion Recruitment lists front end, back end and full stack among its software disciplines, and Nexus IT Group describes placing a legal tech startup's first engineer, a full stack developer working in NodeJS, React, AWS and MongoDB.
For these hires, ask each firm for recent placements in your framework at your level, and agree who will assess the candidate's code or past technical work before the search starts.
Choose the kind of firm for the hire
A retained search firm suits a hire that sets direction: a CTO, CIO, CISO or chief AI officer. The firm is paid in stages to run the search, which funds the work of approaching leaders who are not looking for a job. In the first group, Cowen Partners, The Good Search and Heidrick & Struggles describe themselves as retained, and Keller's pages describe both retained and contingent work.
A contingency recruiter or staffing firm suits engineers, developers and IT staff, especially when you need more than one or want to try someone on contract first. Next Step Systems is paid only if you hire its candidate, Tier2Tek only when you hire, and Sparks Group says employers typically pay only when a placement is made. Alpha Apex Group, Insight Global, Motion Recruitment, Nexus IT Group, Robert Half, Scion Technology and Sparks Group also supply contract staff.
When you need both a leader and the team under them, a firm from the second group that also runs executive searches can cover both. Ask for a reference from each kind of search before you rely on it for either.
How to brief a tech recruiter
Recruiters screen against the brief you give them. "Senior engineer" covers someone who maintains a mature platform and someone who builds a product from nothing, and a CTO brief can mean a hands-on architect or an executive who manages managers.
In a 2021 episode on building systems, I said you should learn a skill "to a level to be able to do it, so then you can someday hire someone who does it properly." I'd apply that before a first technology hire. Understand the work well enough to describe what the person must deliver and to judge the shortlist, or bring in someone technical you trust to interview with you. A recruiter can find candidates; it cannot decide what you need.
Write the brief and decide the model
Name the role, its level, the stack or systems it owns, the reporting line and what the person must deliver in the first six months. Decide whether you need a permanent hire, a contractor or a contract-to-hire trial, which tells you which kind of firm to call. For a single leadership search, compare CTO recruiters and CIO and IT executive search firms.
Ask for technology hires like yours
Request references from clients who hired at your level and in your setting. Several firms above publish no technology placement on the pages read, and a client logo does not say which role was filled.
Agree how candidates will be assessed
Ask who screens technical skills before you see a candidate, and how. A skills test, a technical interview by an engineer and a conversation with a generalist recruiter are different filters.
Put the terms in writing
Compare proposals on the same points: the fee and what it is calculated on, when each payment is due, what happens if the hire leaves early, and whether a quoted timeline ends at a shortlist, an accepted offer or a start date.
- Which technology roles at our level have you filled in the past two years, and can we speak to those clients?
- Is this search retained, contingent or contract, and when is each payment due?
- What is the fee calculated on: base salary, total cash compensation or a flat amount?
- Who assesses technical skills before candidates reach us, and how?
- What happens if the hire leaves in the first months: a refund, a replacement search or nothing?
- Which companies are off-limits to you because they are clients?
- Does your quoted timeline end at a shortlist, an accepted offer or a start date?
