13 Science Recruiters for Lab, R&D and Leadership Hires

By , co-founder of Alpha Apex Group, one of the thirteen firms below

Published Updated 13 min read

Hiring a scientist means finding someone who can do the work your team needs, whether that is running established tests, developing a new method or leading a research program. A specialist recruiter can help you find candidates with the right background and assess their interest in the role. Your team still needs to define the work and judge the scientific expertise.

This guide compares 13 science recruiters and staffing firms. It explains the roles they cover, the hiring arrangements they offer and the questions that will help you choose a partner. Some support individual lab hires; others also offer executive search or teams that deliver scientific work.

Compare the science recruiters

These firms describe scientific recruitment or staffing on their own sites. The pool starts with the firms previously covered here, with Actalent and Kelly added for staffing and workforce options. The list is alphabetical. Other specialist firms, including Hays Life Sciences, Hyper Recruitment Solutions and Randstad Life Sciences, were not reviewed for this guide; leaving a firm out is not a judgment on it.

Match the service to your hire, then confirm discipline and recruiting territory; an office address alone does not establish coverage. For deeper comparisons, see the pharmaceutical executive search and chemical recruiter guides.

Network Scientific Recruitment website, captured October 2026.

Potential fit
Employers comparing permanent scientific recruitment with temporary lab cover.

Network Scientific describes recruiting two temporary lab technicians for work on soldering intended for use in space. Its laboratory temps page (opens in a new tab) also states that the business is REC accredited. Its team includes industry-experienced scientists, and its site lists temporary, permanent and contract opportunities across the UK, US and Europe.

For UK temps, its FAQ (opens in a new tab) says Network employs the worker, handles right-to-work checks and covers the Agency Workers Regulations, including equal treatment on pay and basic conditions after 12 weeks in the same role. The host lab retains site safety, daily supervision and compliance with its own procedures.

Compare fees, guarantees and timing

Ask for a written proposal that states the fee basis, payment dates and what happens if the hire leaves or a temporary assignment ends early. A useful comparison separates the price of recruitment from the cost of employment and any later conversion fee.

Permanent recruitment fees

Reed provides a concrete UK example of how a provider prices its service. Use it to identify what to compare in a proposal.

Reed’s general UK employment agency terms (opens in a new tab), effective April 1, 2025, publish permanent introduction fees of 22% for Standard, 25% for Advanced and 27% for Premium service. The fee basis is first-year gross remuneration, including commission, bonuses and benefits, with a £2,000 minimum. Part-time roles are charged on the full-time-equivalent salary, and the salary used is the higher of the figure advised at booking and the actual salary to be paid. Early termination of the hire's employment or a later reduction in their pay does not reduce that basis. VAT is added at the prevailing rate. These are Reed’s published general terms; confirm the applicable service and any agreed variation for your assignment.

Reed also charges 50% of the applicable introduction or fixed-term fee if the client withdraws an accepted offer. For any proposal, establish the fee base, extra expenses and cancellation trigger.

Temporary rates and conversion costs

Network’s UK FAQ says its rate covers wages, holiday, National Insurance, pension, statutory costs and margin, plus any agreed extras such as travel, on-call or out-of-hours work. Its pre-agreed temp-to-perm fee reduces over time; request the schedule.

Reed’s general UK terms set a permanent transfer fee of 22% of first-year gross remuneration, using the full-time equivalent for part-time roles. If the worker is engaged in another capacity, or remuneration is not disclosed within seven days of request, the fee is instead 416 times the last hourly charge rate, or 52 times the daily rate. For temporary workers, and for contractors who have not opted out of the Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003, the client can instead elect by prior written notice a further 26-week hire in place of the transfer fee for direct engagement or engagement through another supplier. The option does not apply to referrals to a third party. Confirm the applicable transfer window and any agreed variation before signing.

What happens when a hire does not work out

A guarantee can mean a rebate, a replacement search or a staffing credit. Reed’s permanent terms link its rebate period to the service level, so compare that protection alongside the fee.

ServiceFull fee rebate if the hire leavesHalf fee rebate if the hire leaves
StandardWithin the first 2 weeksAfter 2 weeks, within the first 8 weeks
AdvancedWithin the first 4 weeksAfter 4 weeks, within the first 12 weeks
PremiumWithin the first 6 weeksAfter 6 weeks, within the first 26 weeks
Reed’s general UK permanent-placement rebate schedule, effective April 1, 2025. Eligibility conditions and exclusions apply.

Reed’s conditions include timely payment and written notification within seven days of termination. The guarantee excludes departures caused by redundancy or a material change to the position. It also excludes fixed-term placements, fixed-term or temporary-to-permanent conversions, and deposits, among other exclusions. A rebate becomes repayable if you re-engage the candidate within 12 months after their employment ends. Confirm the complete terms for your assignment.

Strategic Search’s retained-search promise, described in its profile, instead covers a replacement search with expenses still payable.

For temporary staff, Reed’s terms describe a two-day credit if the worker proves unsatisfactory in the first two days. It applies to bookings of at least five working days and the worker’s first assignment with the client, requires notification, and requires the services to stop immediately. Its scientific recruitment page says it will replace an unsatisfactory temporary employee at no additional cost under a two-day working guarantee. Have Reed confirm the remedy in your agreement.

How quickly someone can start

Network Scientific’s FAQ, captured in September 2026, says basic lab assistants can start in as little as 24 to 72 hours, provided both the employer and worker complete the required documentation promptly. Its FAQ says specialist roles can take longer, depending on availability, notice periods and site checks.

Treat that as Network's estimate for basic temporary lab assistant roles, not a guide to specialist or permanent hires. For your own vacancy, ask for separate estimates for the first qualified candidates, interviews, an accepted offer and a start date. Tell the recruiter about any assessment or site requirements that must happen before someone can work.

Give the recruiter a brief they can use

I’d define the role and the person’s day-to-day work before looking for candidates. Write down what they will do and own, so both the recruiter and candidate can judge the fit.

  1. Define the work

Write down the methods, instruments or research questions involved, the decisions the person will own and what successful performance would look like. Explain the balance between established procedures and open-ended research.

  2. Separate essential experience from teachable skills

Mark which methods, instruments and regulatory experience the candidate must bring and which your team can teach, and ask the recruiter to screen only on the first list. Ask for comparable assignments to check whether those requirements are realistic and, where possible, a reference from a client in a similar scientific setting.

  3. Agree on technical assessment

Your scientific team might discuss prior research, use a sample dataset or ask for a critique of a method. Keep the exercise proportionate, explain the criteria and avoid requests for confidential work.

  4. Settle the handoff

Name the manager who will induct the hire, the training required and when the recruiter will check in.

  • Consultant: Who will handle the assignment, and which comparable scientific roles have they filled?
  • Assessment: What will the recruiter assess, and what will our scientific panel assess?
  • Sourcing: Where will candidates come from, and which employers are off limits?
  • Temporary staff: Who employs and supervises them, and what does the rate include?
  • Pay: What recent salary comparisons support this role and location?
  • Terms: What fee, conversion charge, cancellation cost or guarantee condition could change the total?
  • Support: What happens after the person starts, and how will a problem be handled?
