Top Entry Level Show Lasers, Stage Lagers & Laser Lights
So I have gotten really into lasers lately.
And when I looked around the industry, I found it hard to find a singular source of good reliable laser company options for starters.
And navigating what laser to buy… and what how to get a Variance… It’s honestly overwhelming…
So this post…
I’m just trying to share a bit of what I have been figuring out as I go along.
But this will be me encompassing the companies that I know in the space and what I have learned.

Laser Variances & Are Alibaba Lasers a Bad Idea?
To start off, I will just say that laser variances are quite confusing.
Right when I got into lasers I saw all of these lasers on Alibaba that were so cheap and powerful!
So of course I snagged one thinking I would figure out the variance thing later…
Shortly after I start researching into this and it’s like “Oh… this laser is illegal… I can’t use this in public…”
And so alas, you should learn the variance process. I don’t even fully understand it but that’s why I have my buddy Mr. Gpt to explain.
What is a Laser Variance and how do you get one?
A laser variance is an essential aspect of using high-powered lasers for entertainment in the United States. It is a special permit issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that allows the use of Class IIIb or IV lasers, which are typically found in light shows and entertainment applications.
Why is a Laser Variance Necessary?
The primary purpose of a laser variance is safety. High-powered lasers can be hazardous, and their use is strictly regulated to prevent accidents and injuries. Obtaining a laser variance is not just about legal compliance; it’s also about ensuring that those operating the lasers are aware of and can implement the necessary safety measures.
The Process of Obtaining a Laser Variance
Research and Understanding: Begin by understanding FDA regulations regarding high-powered lasers. Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements and safety standards that must be met.
Application Preparation: The process involves filling out an FDA form, typically the "Application for Variance from 21 CFR 1040.11(c)" for laser light shows. This form requires detailed information about the laser equipment, usage plans, safety measures, and the qualifications of the person(s) operating the laser.
Documentation of Safety Measures: Develop a comprehensive laser safety protocol. This should include how you plan to use the laser, safety training for operators, audience safety measures, and equipment maintenance.
Submission and Follow-up: Submit the application to the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). The processing time can vary, so be prepared for a waiting period. Keep track of your application and be ready to provide additional information if the FDA requests it.
Final Approval: Once your application is reviewed and if it meets all the safety requirements, the FDA will grant the variance. This approval allows you to legally operate high-powered lasers for your shows.
The Bottom Line
Acquiring a laser variance independently can be a complex and time-consuming process, but it is a crucial step for ensuring safety and compliance in the use of high-powered entertainment lasers. Thorough preparation and understanding of FDA requirements are key to successfully navigating this process.

From what I gather, the go-to for Hobbyist lasers. I can’t really tell how many people use this at a pro level, yet it looks like a pretty dreamy starting spot for a hobbyist.

What laser am I buying?
To be honest I am not totally sure… I’m leaning toward LaserCube.
Yet Sheds could probably get more power for the money.
X-laser seems like a great way to do it because then I don’t have to deal with a variance.
Pangolin honestly seems out of my price range at this time.
So that’s where I’m at.
Any other laser that you would recommend?
