AI and Machine Learning Recruiters: 22 Firms Compared

Published Updated 23 min read
Hiring your first machine learning engineer, or a head of AI to lead a growing team, is hard to judge from the outside. The same title means different work at different companies, and a resume full of the right terms says little about whether someone has put a model into production. A recruiter who works in this field can widen the search and help you test what candidates have actually built.
This guide compares 22 recruiters whose own sites show a service for hiring AI and machine learning talent. It groups them by the kind of firm they are, shows the evidence, fees and guarantees each one publishes, and ends with what to settle before you sign. It is about recruiters who find AI people for you. Several also describe AI tools in their own search process; that is their claim, and a separate question for the first call.
DisclosureJake Jorgovan co-founded Alpha Apex Group, one of the 22 firms in this list.
Compare AI and machine learning recruiters
The firms fall into four groups: recruiters that present AI or data hiring as their specialism, recruiters and search firms with an AI and machine learning practice, large staffing firms that recruit AI roles among many others, and two industry specialists (AI chips and quantitative finance). The groups show a firm's main fit, and many firms overlap. Each firm's own service, case, client, pricing and FAQ pages were read on October 6, 2026, and a firm is listed where those pages show a recruiting service for AI or machine learning roles. The list is not ranked, and other firms recruit in this field too.
Few of these firms publish a fee. On the pages read in October 2026, AITA's pricing page (titled 2024 Services and Pricing) lists a contingency fee of 20% to 40% of the hire's annual salary, Redfish Technology states 25% of the base first-year salary, and Alliance says it charges a percentage of first-year salary without giving the rate. The executive search fee guide explains the usual structures.

AI and data specialists
4 of 22 firmsThese firms present AI, machine learning or data recruitment as their specialism; RWA and Magna also recruit wider software and IT roles. Start here for engineers and researchers whose skills a general technology recruiter may struggle to assess.
AITA website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A venture-backed startup hiring several AI engineers on a contingency fee
- Published pricing
- contingency fee of 20% to 40% of the hire's annual salary, paid only on hire; a dedicated recruiting team billed monthly on a six-month minimum; executive search on a monthly retainer plus a success fee
- Evidence
- success stories (opens in a new tab)
AITA's success stories are anonymous but specific. It reports placing five senior AI engineers and technical leads for a healthtech company within two weeks, 30 engineers over six months for an autonomous vehicle company and 15 AI specialists, including ML engineers, for an education technology company over three months. It also attributes later results to those teams, such as a 25% cut in system errors; those are the firm's own accounts of its clients' outcomes.
The firm calls itself "a recruiting agency exclusively focused on artificial intelligence". Its homepage (opens in a new tab) reports a 14-day average time to be introduced to the hire and 92% of engineers still in role after one year. The same 156+ figure is labeled clients served on the homepage and placements on the success stories page, and no tile states a method. Its pricing page (opens in a new tab), titled 2024 Services and Pricing, sets out the three models above; for executive search, more than half of the fee is due on success.
Harnham

It gives an average of 66 days to fill AI/ML positions and 10 days to fill a contract position, without saying which stage the average ends at. Its July 2025 post on reaching 15,000 placements says that history, which began in 2006, runs from analysts to chief data officers, AI directors and heads of AI. None of these totals is an AI-only count.
Its AI and machine learning page lists AI architecture, AI engineering, generative AI, applied data science, ML engineering, MLOps, ML platform engineering and natural language processing roles, with permanent, contract and executive search. The talent solutions page describes an "exclusive focus on data and AI roles" and carries named testimonials; Johnson Kuan of DirecTV credits Harnham with "finding top Data Science & Engineering talent". Its three case-study titles do not mention machine learning, and the pages read publish no fees or guarantee. For broader finance hiring, see the hedge fund recruiters guide.
JetThoughts is not included: its homepage and services page describe product engineering for startups by its own engineers, with no service recruiting AI or machine learning talent for clients.
Define the role before you call a recruiter
"AI engineer" can describe a researcher who trains new models, a machine learning engineer who takes models into production, an MLOps engineer who runs the infrastructure, or a software engineer who builds products on top of existing models. Recruiters can only search well for the job you can describe, and the firms above cover different parts of that range. On the pages read, RWA, Kaliba and Madison Bridge list researcher roles; Harnham and PALTRON list MLOps engineers; Insight Global and Focus GTS list forward deployed engineers; and Alpha Apex Group, AITA and Harnham describe searches for AI leaders.
On an episode of my podcast in September 2020, I described the first step of any hire as writing down what the person will do day to day, and then the criteria they need to have met 90 days in. Without that, you can hire a strong person who does not fit the role you actually have.
I'd do the same before briefing an AI recruiter. Name the problem the hire will own, the systems they will work on, and what a good result at 90 days looks like. If the role is senior enough to set your technical direction, compare CTO executive search firms as well; if it is mainly analytics, a data and analytics recruiter may fit better.
What to settle before you sign
Ask for AI hires like yours
Request two or three examples of roles the firm has filled at your level and in your setting, and a reference you can call. Firm-wide placement counts and client logos describe the whole business, and a firm that recruits across many technology roles may have placed few AI specialists.
Ask how candidates are assessed
Find out who screens candidates and how: code reviews, system design exercises, published research or calls with former managers. Ask whether the recruiter can explain the difference between the roles above in terms of your project.
Agree the terms in writing
Compare proposals on the fee basis, when each payment is due, what happens if the hire leaves early and whether a quoted timeline ends at a shortlist, an offer or a start date. The speed claims above end at different points, from a first introduction to the day the person starts work.
- Which AI or ML roles like ours have you filled in the past two years, and can we speak to one of those clients?
- Who runs the search day to day, and how do they test technical depth?
- Is this contingency, retained or a monthly model, and what percentage of which salary is the fee?
- Which parts of the fee are due before a hire, and are they refundable?
- Who stays in touch after the start date, and what happens if the hire leaves in the first months: a replacement, a refund or nothing?
- When you quote a timeline, is the end point a shortlist, a signed offer or a start date?
