Hiring a chief marketing officer means choosing who will lead your marketing team and connect its work to the company's growth. You may need stronger positioning, a more effective way to win customers, or a leader who can bring separate marketing functions together. A search firm can help you define that role, reach suitable candidates and assess their experience.
This guide compares 14 firms that recruit CMOs and other senior marketing leaders, from marketing specialists to broader executive search practices. It covers their relevant services, the fees and timelines some publish, how to choose between a CMO and a VP of Marketing, and what to ask before appointing a search partner.
Compare CMO and marketing executive search firms
The list includes marketing-focused recruiters, such as BernHart Associates, Intelligent People, MarketPro and tml Partners, and broader executive search firms with named practices covering marketing leadership, such as Heidrick & Struggles, Russell Reynolds Associates and RSR Partners. The groups overlap: Scion recruits product leaders as well as marketing executives, and several firms also fill VP and director roles.
A marketing-focused recruiter suits a search where depth in the marketing candidate market matters most; Intelligent People and MarketPro both say their recruiters have worked in marketing. A broader firm's practice suits an appointment tied to wider leadership questions, such as succession, ownership change or how marketing, sales and customer leadership divide, where Heidrick, Russell Reynolds and RSR describe related work. In either case, compare the people who would run your search and the comparable assignments they can discuss.

Should you hire a CMO or a VP of Marketing?
I'd define the authority of the role before choosing its title. Consider a CMO mandate when the hire will own marketing strategy and represent the function on the executive team. A VP of Marketing is the better fit when that strategy is set elsewhere, by the CEO or an existing CMO, or when the role covers a defined remit or division; make that narrower scope explicit in the brief.
Some companies give a VP comparable responsibility, and the firms' own role descriptions show why the title alone is not enough. Intelligent People's marketing search page says CMO and VP of Marketing responsibilities are often similar, and its VP description includes reporting to the CEO. tml Partners' CMO page describes a marketing director as typically executing strategy within a division or function. The same title can therefore carry different authority from one company to the next.
| Area | Agree in the brief |
|---|---|
| Strategy | Will this leader set marketing strategy, share that responsibility, or execute an agreed strategy? |
| Accountability | Which business outcomes will the leader own, and to whom will they report? |
| Budget | Which investment decisions can they make, and which require approval? |
| Relationships | How will they share decisions with sales, product and customer leaders? |
| Team | Can they redesign the marketing organization and appoint its leaders? |
Several of the firms recruit below the CMO level too:
- BernHart: marketing manager to CMO
- Cowen: VP of marketing, product marketing and demand generation roles
- Intelligent People: head of marketing, marketing director and VP roles
- MarketPro: senior manager to CMO
- Scion: VPs of Marketing
If the role is mainly about revenue, with sales and customer teams reporting to it, compare sales leadership recruiters as well. Russell Reynolds' practice, for example, covers chief revenue and chief commercial officers alongside CMOs.
Digital and growth marketing leaders
A digital, growth or performance marketing leader needs a more specific brief. Say which channels the person will own, how deep the measurement and analytics work goes, whether they will build a team or work through agencies, and how their targets connect to product and sales.
BernHart, RSI, Scion and Intelligent People each name digital or growth leadership roles in the services described in their entries.
When interim or fractional leadership fits
Interim or fractional leadership can cover a gap while a permanent search runs, help clarify an unsettled role, or provide ongoing senior marketing judgment part time. In the third case, a fractional arrangement can be the answer in its own right, with no permanent hire to follow.
tml Partners recruits interim and fractional CMOs as well as permanent ones; its CMO page says many organizations appoint them during transformation, growth or leadership transitions. Intelligent People's marketing search page also lists interim and fractional CMO roles. The guide to interim and fractional CMO consultants compares more providers.
Write a CMO brief that helps the firm search
Before asking a recruiter for candidates, agree why the role exists and what the new leader must accomplish. A replacement, a first CMO appointment and an expansion into a new market can require different experience, even when the job title is identical.
In my 2018 article on why marketing fails, I described a framework Dan McDade of PointClear taught me: message, market and medium. The message includes the value proposition, the market is the buyer you are trying to reach, and the medium is the channel you use.
I'd use those questions to make the brief more specific. If the offer is hard to distinguish from competitors, ask for evidence of positioning work. If you are entering a new buyer market, look for someone who understands that buying process. If the challenge is making a channel work at greater scale, examine candidates' experience building the team and processes behind it.
The framework is a starting point. Marketing may already be performing well, so say what needs to be preserved as the business grows, then add the authority questions from the previous section.
A one-page CMO brief
Give each search firm the same starting point
- Business reason for the hire
- the opportunity or problem, with evidence
- Marketing priorities
- positioning, target buyers and channels that need attention
- Expected outcomes
- what should change over the first year
- First 90 days
- the diagnosis, decisions and team plan you expect
- Authority
- reporting line, budget and decisions the CMO can make
- Working relationships
- responsibilities shared with sales, product and communications
- Inherited resources
- team, agencies, contracts and existing commitments
- Practical terms
- location, compensation range, timing and confidentiality
For help setting the compensation range, see the guide to executive compensation consultants.
How much do CMO executive search firms charge?
On the pages read, three firms publish fee guidance as a percentage of the hire's pay, each on a different base. Alliance charges 25% to 33% of first-year total compensation for retained CMO searches, with a $45,000 minimum. Aruba describes 25% to 35% of first-year base salary as typical for executive search. Intelligent People says an executive-level marketing leader often costs 25% to 28% of salary and bonus. Ask every firm to quote against the same brief.
| Firm | Published fee or model | What the fee is based on | When payments fall due | Replacement terms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alliance Recruitment Agency | 25% to 33%, with a $45,000 minimum | The placed CMO's first-year total compensation, for retained CMO searches | Engagement, shortlist delivery and placement | 90-day guarantee advertised |
| Aruba Exec | 25% to 35%, described as typical for executive search firms | The appointed candidate's first-year base salary | Three stages: briefing, shortlist, then offer and acceptance | 12-month terms: replacement search with no additional professional fee; direct research costs apply |
| BernHart Associates Executive Search | Engagement fee | Ask | Ask | Ask |
| Cowen Partners | Retained search; fee not published on the pages read | Ask | Ask | 365-day guarantee published |
| Intelligent People | Often 25% to 28%, for an executive-level marketing leader | The candidate's salary and bonus package | In thirds: engagement, shortlist completion and placement | Ask |
| MarketPro | Performance-based payment model | Ask how the total fee is calculated | Ask what triggers each payment | Mentions a guarantee; ask for the replacement period, eligibility, costs and remedy |
Before comparing quotes, ask whether bonus, equity, expenses and research costs count toward the fee, and which departures a replacement covers: resignation, termination or a change in the role. For fee models beyond these firms, see how executive search fees are calculated.
How long does a CMO search take?
The firms that publish timing measure it to different points. Alliance says most retained CMO searches reach a shortlist within three weeks and an accepted offer within eight to twelve weeks of the signed brief; confidential replacements take longer. Y Scouts' CMO page gives a 75-day average for its searches without naming the end point. The other published figures stop at a candidate slate, a shortlist, a placement or a filled role. To plan a start date, add the chosen candidate's notice period after the offer.
| Firm | Roles covered | Milestone | Published timing | Qualifier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alliance Recruitment Agency | Retained CMO searches | Shortlist | Within three weeks | Most searches; confidential replacements take longer |
| Alliance Recruitment Agency | Retained CMO searches | Accepted offer | Eight to twelve weeks from the signed brief | Most searches; confidential replacements take longer |
| Cowen Partners | Executive searches, including CMOs | Qualified candidate slate | Three weeks | Average from kickoff; the homepage also cites a 38-day average time to candidate |
| Cowen Partners | Executive searches, including CMOs | Placement | An average of six weeks | Firm-wide homepage figure; ask which applies to a CMO search |
| Intelligent People | Marketing executive search | Shortlist | Within five to six weeks | Stated as what the firm can deliver |
| MarketPro | Key marketing roles | Role filled | Approximately ten to twelve weeks | Ask whether "filled" means an accepted offer or a start |
| Y Scouts | Executive searches, in answer to its CMO timeline question | End point not stated | An average of 75 days; about 14 days to identify a candidate | Averages, down from 90 days historically; the firm says timing varies by search |
Ask each firm to put its research, shortlist, interview and offer stages into the proposal, and make sure your own team can meet candidates and make decisions within that schedule.
How do you assess a CMO candidate's results?
Ask each finalist to separate what they changed from what they inherited. A useful answer gives the starting point, the period, the budget and team they had, the decisions they made, and how the results were measured, including what that measurement could not show.
Where marketing's effect on pipeline and revenue can be traced, ask for those figures and how the previous company attributed them; the CMO's guide to multi-channel attribution covers the methods. Strong candidates describe marketing's contribution alongside sales, product, pricing and market conditions. If a story credits marketing alone for the growth, ask the search firm to test it in references.
Choose the partner and plan the handover
I'd compare the proposed search teams on the same brief before choosing. Ask them to explain where they would look, how they would assess the work your CMO needs to do, and which past assignments support that approach.
- Who will run our assignment, and what other searches will compete for their time?
- Which relevant CMO placements can you discuss, and may we speak with a client reference?
- Which companies are off limits because of your existing client relationships?
- How will you distinguish a candidate's contribution from the brand, budget and team they inherited?
- What are the full fees, payment milestones, cancellation terms and replacement conditions?
- How will you protect confidentiality and keep us informed during the search?
Agree on the handover before the offer is accepted. Give the CMO the agency contracts, team responsibilities and performance information they need to assess the function.
These firms describe support after placement, on different terms:
- MarketPro: follow-up with the client and the hire over six months.
- Y Scouts: an onboarding plan for the company and the CMO, with check-ins through the first year.
- Alpha Apex Group: ongoing support and advisory services after placement are part of its service description; ask what they include and for how long.
- tml Partners: onboarding support is the final stage of its CMO search, and it says it stays in close contact afterwards; ask what that involves.
Tie any agreed support to the outcomes in your brief, and keep it separate from the replacement terms in the contract.
The final question I'd ask is straightforward: can this team explain how it will find and assess the leader your business actually needs?

How this list was made
This guide revisits the original article's 17 firms and retains 14 whose current pages describe CMO recruitment, either as a named service or within a broader practice. It is not a comprehensive survey of the market. Firm pages were read between September 26 and October 1, 2026. Firms appear alphabetically, without a ranking. Service descriptions, fees and timelines come from the firms; potential-fit suggestions are this guide's judgment.
