Electrical Engineering Recruiters: 11 Firms Compared

By

Published Updated 14 min read

An electrical engineer might design the circuit boards in your product, keep a plant's controls running or plan the substations a utility needs. Those are different jobs with different candidate pools, and a recruiter who fills one of them well may know few people for another. A recruiter who works in your part of the field can reach engineers who are not looking for a job and judge their technical depth before you spend time on interviews.

This guide compares eleven recruiters that fill electrical engineering roles. It groups them by the kind of hire they suit, shows the evidence and terms each publishes, and ends with what to settle before you sign.

DisclosureJake Jorgovan co-founded Alpha Apex Group, one of the eleven firms in this list.

Compare electrical engineering recruiters by the hire you need

Each firm below shows a recruiting service for electrical engineers or the electrical industry on its own site. Some are built around the power industry, some have a dedicated electrical engineering page, and others name electrical engineers among the roles their engineering practice fills. The list is not ranked, and other firms also recruit electrical engineers.

None of the eleven publishes a fee percentage on the pages read in October 2026, so the last column shows the search model or fee basis where a firm names one.

Eleven electrical engineering recruiters, grouped by the hire they suit and A to Z within each group, as their own pages described them on October 6, 2026. Figures, client names and terms come from the firms themselves; "Not stated" marks details the pages read do not publish.

Eric Chung of LS Energy Solutions writes on Egret's homepage that in "the field of Power Distribution and Automation industries" its recruiter is "one of the best recruiters without question". Egret was founded in 1999 to recruit for the electrical industry and says it has placed "over 800 new employees for over 400 clients". That count covers every function it fills, from sales and marketing to operations and engineering.

Its utilities page (opens in a new tab) covers power generation, transmission and distribution for investor-owned and public utilities, municipalities and co-ops. Its power distribution page (opens in a new tab) covers makers of switchgear, transformers, relays and inverters. Engineering roles run from individual contributor to VP. Egret presents two to four candidates on average and stays in contact with each placed candidate through the first six months.

contingency fee as a percentage of base salary and realistic first-year bonus; percentage not shown

GTR's testimonials (opens in a new tab) come from clients identified by title. A senior vice president of transmission says they have worked with GTR "for over a decade" to fill highly technical roles connecting generation to the grid. A director of distribution engineering calls it "a great partner" for their engineering firm. Neither client is named.

Founded in 2008, GTR works only in the electric utility and power delivery industry. It recruits substation engineers for voltage levels from 2.4kV to 500kV, transmission line engineers, distribution engineers, and specialists in planning, SCADA, relay protection and NERC compliance. Its homepage reports an 86% offer-to-acceptance rate and an interview-to-hire ratio of 3.2, without saying over what period.

GTR offers retained, engaged and contingency search and contract or contract-to-hire staffing. Its fee page (opens in a new tab) bases the contingency fee on the offer's base salary and realistic first-year bonus, but the percentage is missing from the page. A retained search starts with what its clients page (opens in a new tab) calls "a small commitment fee up front".

retained search terms published in October 2026: billed one third at the start of the search and two thirds on the candidate's start date, with a 120-day replacement guarantee

On its electrical engineering page, 180 Engineering describes a search for a global medical device company that needed a lead electrical engineer with PCB design, power supply and Class I and II device experience. It found the engineer after 35 days of sourcing and screening. The client is not named and the case is not dated; the page was first published in December 2020.

The firm says every candidate completes an in-depth interview with its team before a client sees them, covering analog and digital design, firmware or the specialty the role needs. Its client testimonials (opens in a new tab) include an electrical engineering director at a Fortune 100 consumer products company, who says 180 is "very hands-on and responsive" in filling contingent staffing needs.

180 Engineering offers contingent and retained search for direct hires, and its site also lists contract staffing. Its retained search page (opens in a new tab) says fewer than 20% of its searches are retained. For direct hires, its direct hire page (opens in a new tab) describes a replacement policy for a hire who leaves for any reason other than downsizing or layoff, without stating the period.

financing terms published in October 2026: through PayPal, fees up to $10,000 can be paid over 6, 12 or 24 months, or up to $20,000 over 36 or 48 months

Controls engineers, electrical designers, drafters, engineers and technicians, engineering managers, project managers, and firmware, quality and test engineers are the positions Goodwin lists for electrical hiring. Its recruiting team for these roles includes specialists in manufacturing, energy, electronics and medical devices.

Goodwin describes itself as a national direct-hire recruitment firm, working across industries from hospitality to construction, and its employer services page (opens in a new tab) offers contingent, retained or RPO arrangements. Its Hire Now, Pay Later page (opens in a new tab) lets an employer spread the fee over time through PayPal, which requires a personal PayPal account; a business account does not qualify. The page's estimator uses 25%, 30% and 35% APR examples, its fine print gives a fixed APR of 0% to 35.99% depending on amount and credit, and any part of the fee above the limit is paid to Goodwin separately. If the candidate never starts, Goodwin refunds the full fee; if the hire leaves during the guarantee period, the remedy is a single replacement or a credit under the fee agreement, and no refund is due. The guarantee stays valid only if the financing is started by the due date in the fee agreement. The testimonials read are unnamed and do not identify an electrical role.

Define the role before you brief a recruiter

A recruiter can only search well for the role you describe. A firm that places PCB designers for medical devices may have no substation engineers in its network, and a utility specialist may know few firmware engineers.

On my podcast in 2022, I talked about promoting a team member into a new leadership role. My advice was to write the job down as if you were hiring someone new, and to "define success for them in one sentence" (Working Without Pants, episode 213). For our podcast managers, that sentence was that every episode gets published on time and error-free.

I'd write that sentence before calling any of these firms. Here is a hypothetical example: "a lead engineer who takes our next power supply from schematic to a certified product within a year". Pair that outcome with the specialty, industry standards and seniority the role requires, and the recruiter has a clear brief and you have a test for every candidate presented.

What to settle before you sign

  1. Write down the role and its setting

Name the specialty (power systems, controls, PCB and hardware design, firmware, substation or plant reliability), the industry and its standards, the seniority and the reporting line. Then match it to the groups above. If the role is a VP or chief engineer, also compare engineering executive search firms. For solar, wind or storage projects, renewable energy recruiters are worth a look as well.

  2. Ask for evidence from searches like yours

Published examples vary: some name electrical engineering hires, others describe recruiting elsewhere in the power industry. Ask every firm for references from clients who hired a similar engineer in a similar industry within the past two years. A reference call lets you ask what went wrong as well as what went right.

  3. Agree the terms in writing

Compare proposals on the same points: contingency or retained, the fee basis, when each payment is due, what happens if the hire leaves early, and whether a quoted timeline ends at a shortlist, an accepted offer or a start date.

Questions for the first call:

  • Which electrical engineering roles like ours have you filled in the past two years, and for which industries?
  • Who will run the search day to day, and what is their technical background?
  • How will you protect our company's identity and candidates' information during the search?
  • How do you test a candidate's technical depth before we see them?
  • Is the search contingency or retained, and which parts of compensation count toward the fee?
  • When is each payment due, and what happens if the hire leaves in the first months?
  • When you quote a timeline, does it end at the shortlist, the accepted offer or the start date?
