Insurance Recruiters and Executive Search Firms Compared

By , co-founder of Alpha Apex Group, one of the 22 firms below

Published Updated 14 min read

Hiring an insurance leader means finding someone who can take responsibility for a specific part of the business. You may need a chief underwriting officer, a claims leader or an executive to run a brokerage. A search partner should understand that role, the insurance segment it serves and the market where suitable candidates work.

This guide compares 22 insurance executive search firms, recruiters and headhunters. It explains their stated focus, the differences worth discussing on a first call and the terms to settle before starting a search.

Compare insurance recruiters by segment and search scope

Start with firms that cover your insurance segment and the level of responsibility you are hiring for. Each firm's own site shows executive search or senior recruitment.

The groups overlap. Segments shown are examples from each firm's pages; ask about wider coverage directly. Fit is an editorial starting point; placement examples and figures are firm-reported.

Alongside international and UK practices, the groups distinguish insurance-focused executive search, brokerage and distribution hiring, insurance practices within multi-industry firms, and broader recruiting that includes leadership placements alongside other roles.

Firm pages read September 27 to October 2, 2026. Firms are grouped by service, with selected segments and client types from their own pages. Not specified means the cited pages name no insurance segments.

Odgers reports completing 4,900 searches globally over the last three years, a firm-wide total across all sectors.

Odgers' UK insurance page describes permanent and interim board appointments. This gives a UK board a relevant starting point for discussing immediate cover and the permanent leadership search together.

For that combined brief, establish how the team will assess an interim leader against the immediate responsibilities and the permanent candidate against the longer-term mandate.

A search in another country needs a proposal from the team serving that market.

A named consultant leads its retained UK senior and board searches for insurers, brokers, reinsurers and managing general agents. Much of its London insurance work involves Lloyd's and specialty or commercial lines.

How to choose the right search team

I'd start with the decisions the new leader must own, then compare the consultants' relevant work and assessment plans.

  1. Give each search firm the same role brief

For a head of underwriting, write down the classes of business, authorities and portfolio responsibilities. For a brokerage leader, define responsibility for producers, client relationships and the financial performance of the business.

  2. Ask where suitable candidates work and why

Ask the proposed consultant to explain the candidate market. An insurance specialist can still be a poor fit for an unfamiliar segment, and a cross-industry firm may have a consultant with directly relevant experience.

If the brief deliberately includes candidates from adjacent financial sectors, compare financial-services executive recruiters as well. For a finance appointment, the CFO executive search comparison helps you assess the functional search alongside the insurance expertise required.

  3. Compare the consultant's role in previous assignments

Compare the proposed consultant's own role in comparable assignments and evidence of how those appointments worked out. The guide to choosing an executive search firm develops that comparison beyond sector fit.

  4. Agree the candidate assessment plan

Agree how internal candidates will be assessed alongside external candidates.

How much do insurance recruiters charge?

IRES says there is no one-size-fits-all standard fee and offers retained and hybrid engagements.

Keller's advertised client success fee in October 2026 is 18%; its page does not state the calculation base. Use these published terms to frame a proposal for your assignment.

The executive search fee guide explains what to compare in the payment structure. Settle the following terms in the proposal for your role.

Questions to settle before signing

  • Search team: Who will lead the search, assess candidates and report to us?
  • Scope: Which insurance segments, candidate markets and locations will the research cover?
  • Off-limits: Which employers cannot be approached because of existing client relationships?
  • Confidentiality: How will you protect our identity and candidate information?
  • Fees: What is the calculation base, which expenses are additional and when is each payment due?
  • Changes: Is the assignment exclusive, and what happens if we change or cancel it?
  • Replacement: What remedy applies if the hire leaves, and what are its triggers, exclusions and time limits?

How long does an insurance executive search take?

Stone Executive's October 2026 estimate for a typical UK insurance search is four to eight weeks from briefing to offer acceptance, with notice commonly adding three to six months before the leader starts.

For your assignment, separate four milestones:

  1. First candidates
  2. Completed shortlist
  3. Offer acceptance
  4. Start date

Ask the search team to identify where candidate availability, your interview schedule, referencing and regulatory due diligence could change the plan, and who will support the transition through notice and onboarding.

If the position is already vacant, decide who will hold its authority during the search. The comparison of interim and fractional executive search firms can help you assess temporary leadership cover alongside the permanent appointment.

Choose the team whose proposal makes the work clear enough to judge: the people responsible, the candidate market and the evidence you will use to decide whether someone can do the job.
