Interim and fractional executive search firms: 12 compared

A leadership vacancy can leave important decisions waiting while the company searches for a permanent replacement. An interim executive can take responsibility during that transition. A fractional executive serves a different need: experienced leadership on a part-time basis, with an agreed share of the person's time.
This guide compares twelve firms that recruit or place these leaders. It explains the services each firm describes, the differences worth discussing on a first call, and how to agree on the work before someone starts.
The terms can overlap. A part-time executive can also cover a temporary vacancy. I would make the working arrangement explicit in the brief: what the person will own, when they must be available and who can make decisions when they are away. That gives a recruiter something more useful than a job title.
Compare the firms by the service you need
The first group offers interim recruitment across functions. The second explicitly offers both interim and fractional leaders. The final group addresses healthcare or finance needs. Each firm here describes interim executive recruitment or placement on its own pages; the list does not rank them, cover individual consultants or survey the whole market. These groups describe the services verified for this guide; they do not imply that other arrangements are unavailable.

Where firms publish interim timing, they measure different stages. M&A Executive Search says it presents three to six candidates within one week. Boyden says an interim in place within two to four weeks of first contact is not unusual. BSG's two cases took 20 and 31 calendar days from the search to the executive's first day. McDermott + Bull's 48 to 72 hours leaves the stage unclear, as its entry explains. Ask each firm for its timeline to the same stage.
Interim executive recruitment
5 of 12 firmsBoyden
Back to the comparisonBoyden website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A leadership transition or transformation that may lead into permanent search
It is not unusual for a Boyden client to have an interim executive in place within two to four weeks of first contacting its partners, the firm said in September 2026. Timing depends on role complexity, geography and the client's preferred start. Its assignments include three-to-six-month stabilization work and longer transformations, covering C-suite and functional leaders.
The firm describes regular contact during the assignment and an exit review, with the option to move into a permanent search. That suits a board filling an urgent gap while deciding its long-term leadership needs.

BSG (Boston Search Group)
Back to the comparisonBSG (Boston Search Group) website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Deciding whether the interim should be eligible for the permanent role
BSG reports two anonymous, undated interim-to-permanent cases. Its CEO search identified 230 potential candidates, presented two finalists and took 20 calendar days to the executive's start. The firm says that CEO remained for at least four years. Its CFO search took 31 calendar days to the first working day.
Its i-Exec service offers interim-to-permanent, interim-only, or separate interim and permanent hires, including finite acquisition, divestiture and systems projects. Decide before recruitment whether the interim can compete for the permanent seat. BSG suggests that when a business needs restructuring, one interim can make the difficult team, budget and process decisions before a separate permanent executive leads growth, because those decisions are less encumbered in an interim role.

Cowen Partners
Back to the comparison- Potential fit
- A C-suite vacancy with senior-partner involvement through placement
Cowen Partners says it matches an experienced senior partner to every interim engagement, from the first call to the final placement. Its listed roles include interim CEOs, COOs, CFOs, CHROs, CMOs and executive directors.
For a board or head of talent, clarify who will assess candidates, speak with references and resolve a mismatch after arrival. The stated partner involvement runs through placement; establish what support follows it.
- Ask first
- Who is the senior partner for this search, and what involvement continues after the executive starts?

Korn Ferry
Back to the comparisonKorn Ferry website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Interim talent with administrative support across the engagement
Korn Ferry's FAQ says there is no typical interim length: an assignment could be a one-week consultation or a yearlong project, agreed at the start with an opportunity to extend if the scope changes. The service covers executives and professionals, with sourcing, selection, onboarding, payroll and benefits, coaching or management, and offboarding.
Its FAQ distinguishes an internal “acting” leader from an external interim hire. When briefing the firm, specify the executive responsibility you need and whether the assignment could become permanent. The administrative offer makes the contracting arrangement worth settling with HR and procurement.
- Ask first
- For this executive role and country, who would handle the contract, payroll and management of the assignment?

McDermott + Bull
Back to the comparisonMcDermott + Bull website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- An urgent vacancy or a defined change assignment
In an August 2026 case study, McDermott + Bull describes placing an interim CFO at a PE-backed US consumer company of about $50 million, who developed a consolidated close and reporting schedule and addressed inconsistencies across financial reporting. McDermott + Bull supplies senior-level consultants for vacancies, merger transitions, restructuring and project work across finance, HR, legal, operations, supply chain and IT.
Its timing claim needs a defined milestone. In September 2026 its interim page gave 48 to 72 hours from a request for both placements and a slate of qualified interim leaders, while its homepage said candidates are presented in that window. Ask which of those it will commit to. The interim page also says engagement time frames can change “at no additional cost.” Confirm whether that means no amendment charge and how extra working time is billed.

- Does the proposed timeline mean candidates presented, an agreement signed or the executive starting work?

Alpha Apex Group website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Recruiting temporary cover or a part-time executive
Alpha Apex Group describes interim leaders who hold a role while a permanent search runs, and fractional executives who provide senior expertise part-time. Both services sit on its interim and fractional executive search page.
Its page frames fractional work as senior judgment “a few days a month”, and its technology page lists part-time CIOs, CTOs and CISOs for startups and mid-market firms.
- Ask first
- How many days a month would the proposed executive commit, and who covers urgent decisions in between?

InterimExecs
Back to the comparisonInterimExecs website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- An operating assignment through a network of independent executives
In an undated testimonial on the InterimExecs homepage, Arsenal Capital partner Joelle Marquis said her firm was working with the executive InterimExecs found on two other companies. Its FAQ requires at least three successful interim assignments for RED Team membership; the network handles interim, project and fractional work.
The September 2026 terms describe executives working through their own entities as independent contractors. Evaluation and search are free, with a markup included in the executive's cost. Contracts can generally end with 30 days' notice; hiring permanently requires the executive's agreement and a contract buyout. Request terms for your specific arrangement.

Keller Executive Search
Back to the comparisonKeller Executive Search website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Interim or part-time C-suite leadership
Keller's interim page said in September 2026 that it offers to find a replacement for a candidate who does not meet expectations, at no extra cost, if told within the first 365 days of placement. Its interim service includes candidate evaluation, onboarding, regular check-ins, succession planning and transition support, and an undated testimonial attributed to “Robin M., Managing Partner” credits a Keller interim executive with stabilizing operations; the client company is not named.
Its leadership outsourcing page also names fractional CEO, CFO, COO, CMO and CTO roles supplied part-time or temporarily. Ask how the replacement offer applies to an assignment shorter than a year, and whether it covers fractional work.

M&A Executive Search
Back to the comparisonM&A Executive Search website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A defined initiative that needs interim, fractional or project leadership
M&A Executive Search says it presents three to six interim candidates within one week from a network of 10,000-plus executives, according to its September 2026 service page. That is time to candidate presentation, not a start date. The firm also says it matches hundreds of interim executives a year. The page describes interim assignments of two to twelve months, plus interim-to-hire, long-term fractional and project roles.
Its recruiters help scope responsibilities and develop statements of work; the firm emphasizes manufacturing and aligned industries. For an integration or systems initiative, settle whether the executive also runs the affected function. Its published cost structure is daily or monthly rates without benefits; request the total charge and any separate fees.
- Ask first
- What would belong in the statement of work, and which operating responsibilities would remain with our team?

TrueBridge
Back to the comparisonTrueBridge website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Comparing a fractional executive with a temporary leader or project consultant
SeatGeek CTO Brian D. Murphy credits TrueBridge with finding a fractional CPO to oversee HR while a full-time hire moved into the role.
Part of True, the network distinguishes interim, fractional and project work. Its service definitions put interim leadership at five days a week and fractional at two to four, both typically lasting three to twelve months or longer. Project consultants work one to five days a week on defined deliverables, such as market-entry strategy or organization redesign. Use those working patterns to clarify the responsibility and availability your brief requires.

- Would this brief be better served by a fractional executive or a project consultant, and why?

Healthcare and finance needs
2 of 12 firmsHARTZ Search
Back to the comparisonHARTZ Search website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A healthcare leadership gap with ongoing assignment reporting
HARTZ Search's interim service covers healthcare executives, directors and managers, with weekly progress reports and help onboarding a permanent replacement. Its broader healthcare recruitment includes William “Bill” Bellando's appointment as Geisinger's CIO after a national search.
The Charlotte-based firm names a Joint Commission window, new service lines and leadership departures among reasons to seek interim cover. Specify the service line, operating responsibilities and reporting relationship, then ask for a leader with comparable assignment experience.

StevenDouglas
Back to the comparisonStevenDouglas website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Interim CFO or controller cover with possible finance-team support
StevenDouglas says its finance and accounting project and interim associates average 18 years of practical experience. This describes that associate group, not only CFOs. The service explicitly includes interim CFOs and controllers, with professionals working individually or in teams on reporting, forecasting and acquisition integration.
It is relevant when a finance leadership gap comes with a backlog of execution work. Keep the executive's responsibilities and any supporting project team visible as separate commitments and costs.

- Do we need an interim CFO, a controller, a project team or a combination, and how would each be priced?

Define what the executive can decide
I would start with the outcome, then work backward to the authority and time required. A leader asked to restore reliable financial reporting needs access to the finance team and systems. Someone asked to advise on a market-entry decision may need a different level of access and a shorter engagement.
Before you compare candidates, agree internally on who the executive reports to and which decisions they can make. Include spending, hiring, vendor changes and escalation to the CEO or board where relevant. For a fractional role, also decide who handles urgent matters outside the person's scheduled availability.
Use the same brief with each firm so you can compare its proposed approach.
Interim or fractional executive brief
Fill this in before requesting candidates
- Business need
- the vacancy, operating problem or initiative that requires leadership
- Outcome
- what must be different by the agreed review date
- Authority
- decisions the executive owns, approval limits and matters reserved for the CEO or board
- Working arrangement
- full-time or part-time, on-site needs, availability and coverage outside scheduled hours
- Start and review
- required first working day, initial priorities and the date to assess progress
- Support
- the team, budget, information and systems the executive can use
- End of assignment
- permanent hire, continued fractional support or handover to an internal owner
Two examples of making the brief specific
Strategy and data roles illustrate why a title alone is not enough to brief a search firm. A strategy mandate needs a clear distinction between ongoing leadership and a finite project. A data mandate needs agreement on the responsibilities behind the title. Use the examples below to refine your brief, then ask prospective firms for relevant placement experience.
For a fractional chief strategy officer
Name the strategic decision before deciding on the title. A market-entry assessment, an acquisition plan and an ongoing company strategy role call for different work. Ask candidates to explain how they would develop options, test assumptions and turn an approved plan into responsibilities for the management team.
If the brief is a finite recommendation, discuss a project consultant. If it includes recurring executive decisions and accountability for execution, describe that ongoing leadership responsibility explicitly. If a provider proposes its own consulting team, compare its scope and accountability with the executive role in your brief.
For a fractional chief data officer
Spell out chief data officer in the brief. The initials CDO can also mean chief digital officer, and those titles should not substitute for a description of the work.
For data leadership, specify the business decisions the data must support and the problems the executive should address: governance, data quality, ownership, reporting or a defined implementation. Ask how the candidate would work with technology, privacy and security teams, and how they would explain priorities to nontechnical leaders. Keep responsibility for advising, implementing and approving changes clear.
Assess the candidate and the engagement together
I would learn enough about the function to judge the hire. In a May 2025 productize.co interview (opens in a new tab), I explained that difficult finance hires led me to study finance myself. When I was looking for a new fractional CFO, that understanding told me what to look for, including wanting to see their model. For a fractional CFO, ask the candidate to walk through a financial model they built and explain its assumptions and the decisions it supported; for other roles, ask for the equivalent piece of work.
A relevant title on a résumé is a starting point. Ask for examples of entering a comparable situation, what the executive personally changed, who they worked with and what remained after they left. Speak with references who can describe both the work and the handover.
Availability belongs in that discussion. Request a confirmed start date, on-site requirements and existing commitments. For fractional candidates, ask how conflicts between clients are handled and what happens when your business needs more time than planned.
I would also ask the candidate what they need from the sponsor to succeed. Their answer should help you judge whether the proposed mandate is workable with your team, budget and decision process.
Agree on total cost and exit terms
Ask every shortlisted firm for a written proposal covering the working arrangement you actually need. Compare the total expected spend over the same period, including the executive's rate, any provider fee or markup, travel, minimum commitments and extra time. Then price a possible extension and handover period. A lower day rate can still produce a larger bill if it requires more paid days.
Keep the commercial terms and responsibilities in the same conversation:
- Contracting: who contracts with the executive, and who handles payroll, benefits or invoicing?
- Cancellation: what notice can either side give, and what payments remain due?
- Replacement: what happens if the executive is unavailable or the match does not work?
- Permanent hire: can you hire the executive, and what conversion or buyout fee applies?
- Handover: what documents, access, decisions and open issues must be transferred at the end?
Choose a firm that can explain the proposed candidate's fit and commit to a workable engagement. Before signing, I would want both the executive and the internal sponsor to give the same answer to a simple question: what will this person be responsible for delivering?
