11 Product Manager and Head of Product Recruiters and Search Firms

By , co-founder of Alpha Apex Group, one of the eleven firms below

Published Updated 13 min read

A product hire can change which customer problems your company solves and how your teams decide what to build. Finding the right person means looking beyond a familiar title. You need to understand the products candidates have worked on, the decisions they owned, and the results they helped deliver.

A recruiter can help you find and assess those candidates. This guide compares 11 firms for product managers, heads of product, and chief product officers. It includes published fees, timelines, and replacement terms; seven firms publish at least one of these terms. It also gives you a brief for defining the role before starting a search.

Which product manager recruiters fit your hire?

The firms are grouped by the hire they suit best: product managers and their leaders, senior or sector-specific product leadership, and contract or temporary capacity. The groups overlap. AC Lion and Redfish offer contract hiring alongside Insight Global.

Each of these 11 firms has its own page describing product recruitment; Spencer Stuart is included for enterprise CPO searches. Training provider Product Focus (opens in a new tab) is outside this recruiter comparison. Firms are alphabetical within each group; the shortlist is not a ranking or a complete market list.

Recruiting scope from the firms' own pages, captured September 27–28, 2026. Groups suggest a starting point; they do not limit a firm's capabilities.

AC Lion website, captured October 2026.

Potential fit
Software product hiring across technical and commercial responsibilities.

AC Lion publishes a testimonial from Aubrey Bowser, Global Director of Product Management and Design at Dailymotion, who says the firm consistently presented high-quality candidates. Its page also lists a head of product management placement at an unnamed cybersecurity firm and a chief product officer placement at an unnamed AI/ML data company. Its product division also covers marketing, design, operations, and project management.

The NYC-based firm offers full-time, contract, and temporary hiring, including remote and international product searches. Its FAQ describes technical questions, case studies, and leadership scenarios in candidate assessment.

Ask first
Can you show a bounded, anonymized or fictional senior-PM case and explain how you score product judgment? How do you keep it separate from work on our live roadmap?

Alpha Apex Group website, captured October 2026.

Potential fit
Product manager or head of product hiring with assessment and integration support.

Alpha Apex Group reports more than 2,000 successful placements worldwide across its business. Its product service combines tailored search with assessment of technical skills, strategic thinking, and leadership against the employer's product objectives.

The service includes support as the hire integrates with the team.

Ask first
How would integration support help our head of product agree their scope, decisions owned, and early milestones in the first months? Who delivers that support, and for how long?

Ari Agency website, captured October 2026.

Potential fit
Product leadership and related design or product marketing hires.

95% of all Ari Agency placements stay beyond their first year, the firm reports, across all its recruiting. Its product recruitment page covers junior PM through head of product, alongside product design, marketing, research, and user experience.

Its separate product executive search service (opens in a new tab) serves startups, scale-ups, and growing organizations. That service assesses leaders responsible for building, scaling, or transforming a product function.

Ask first
If our new head of product then needs designers, would the same consultant handle those searches, and how would specialist assessment change?

Product hiring timelines by milestone

The published estimates address different milestones: when you can review candidates, when an offer is extended, and when someone starts. Use the milestone column to identify the period relevant to your hiring plan.

The firms' own timing estimates, captured in September 2026.
Firm and servicePublished estimateMilestone and qualification
Insight Global: product manager staffingTypically 24–48 hours to identify and screen; one to three weeks through interviews, onboarding, and starting workScreening and start are separate milestones; timing depends on interview availability and decision-making
Redfish: engaged search"By the end of the first week, we typically have at least 5 resumes"; normally four weeks to an offerResumes available to send; initial discovery call to offer extended
AC Lion: product recruitmentAverage four to eight weeksCalls this time-to-hire without defining the endpoint; depends on requirements and market conditions

Choose the search and employment model

Redfish describes retained search as paid in phases, engaged search as starting with an upfront fee, and contingent search as charging no fee unless a candidate is hired.

Contingent search can be enough for a well-defined role with an available candidate market; committed research through retained or engaged search can be worth paying for when a role is confidential, senior, or scarce. Compare proposals on candidate access, recruiter time committed, and your internal hiring capacity.

Should you hire a contract product manager or a permanent one?

Consider contract capacity for defined work or temporary cover, and a permanent hire for continuing ownership. If permanence is undecided, settle the mandate before choosing contract-to-permanent hiring. Agree decision authority, the internal sponsor, extension and conversion terms, and handover of research, roadmap decisions, and outstanding commitments when the assignment ends.

When should you hire a head of product or chief product officer?

Consider a product leader when the responsibility requires authority across teams, portfolio priorities, or product investment. A founder stepping back, several PM teams, or a platform shift can prompt that discussion; define the decisions that need a single owner before choosing a title.

Where the brief includes engineering organization and technical strategy, clarify the boundary with the CTO before approaching CTO executive search firms.

Define the product role before briefing recruiters

I'd start with the decisions this person will own and the business outcome you need them to achieve. Agree the authority, team, and resources that go with that responsibility.

In a hypothetical senior-PM brief, the outcome might be better adoption of an existing product with an established engineering team. A hypothetical head-of-product brief might include portfolio priorities and hiring the managers who will lead delivery.

Product hiring brief

Complete this with the hiring manager before the first recruiter call

Product and customer
B2B or B2C, platform or application, users and buyers, product stage, and product-led or sales-led growth.
Business outcome
What adoption or retention needs to improve, its baseline, and the period in which you will assess progress.
Decisions owned
Customer discovery, priorities, roadmap, investment, pricing, and escalation boundaries.
Team and authority
Reporting line, inherited PM and engineering resources, and ownership of design, research, and product marketing.
Relevant experience
Product type, customer complexity, company stage, and leadership responsibility required.
Working arrangement
Location, work authorization, onsite expectations, and permanent or contract scope.
Hiring constraints
Compensation range, interview availability, required start date, and offer authority.

If the brief centers on coordinating delivery of an agreed plan, consider project manager recruiters. Make any overlap with product responsibilities explicit.

How do you assess a product manager's track record?

Trace a product decision from discovery to the outcome, then assess the candidate's contribution and judgment in context.

  1. Establish the context and contribution

Ask about the customer problem, baseline, measurement period, and adoption or retention outcome. Identify the candidate's own decisions, inherited resources, and contribution alongside other teams.

  2. Examine discovery and tradeoffs

Explore how the candidate validated the problem before building, what alternatives they rejected, and how customer evidence changed their priorities.

  3. Test judgment with a bounded work sample

Agree an anonymized or fictional scenario and scoring criteria for assumptions, prioritization, and tradeoffs. Keep the exercise separate from unpaid work on your company's live roadmap.

Questions to ask before appointing a search partner

Use the same brief to compare proposals and resolve the remaining delivery questions.

  • Relevant work: Which completed searches match our product, company stage, and role level, and can we speak with a client reference?
  • Delivery: Who runs the search, what capacity is committed, and how will you reach candidates beyond active applicants?
  • Access: Which companies or candidates are off-limits because of existing client relationships?
  • Updates: What will you report, and how will market evidence change the brief or compensation range?
  • Agreement: What happens if the scope changes or the candidate declines, and which fees or expenses remain payable?

Agree what success looks like and how candidates will be assessed before you sign.
