Sports Executive Search Firms: 12 Recruiters Compared

By

Published Updated 13 min read

A senior hire in sports is closely watched. A new team president, athletic director or head of partnerships will be judged by owners, boards, sponsors and fans, and the people you want may be in jobs they are not looking to leave. A recruiter who works in the industry can reach them quietly, help you weigh someone from inside sports against someone from outside it, and keep the search confidential until you are ready.

This guide compares twelve sports recruiters and executive search firms for teams, leagues, college athletics departments and sporting goods companies. It groups them by the organizations they serve, shows the evidence each publishes and lists what to settle before you sign.

DisclosureJake Jorgovan co-founded Alpha Apex Group, one of the twelve firms in this list.

Compare sports recruiters by the organization you run

Each firm's own pages show a recruiting service dedicated to sports: a firm that works only in sports, a sports or sporting goods practice, or a page for sports hiring. The firms are not ranked, and other recruiters also advertise sports searches.

None of the twelve puts a fee percentage on the pages read in October 2026, so the last column shows the search model, terms or timeline where a firm publishes one. For how retained and contingency fees usually work, see what executive search firms charge.

success stories with named clients (opens in a new tab)

Prodigy's homepage carries testimonials from named sports executives. Nick Pizzutello, chief operating officer of the New York Islanders, describes its search for a senior vice president of content and game presentation. The Orlando Magic's chief people officer describes two executive hires, and the CHRO of Legends/ASM Global says Prodigy made several placements within its stadium portfolio over 12 months. Its success stories add vice presidents of communications and finance for the Boston Bruins and TD Garden, and its client page (opens in a new tab) shows logos including the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Yankees and PGA Tour. The testimonials carry no dates.

Its search process (opens in a new tab), read in October 2026, sets out a status report on target candidates within 7 to 10 days, recommended candidate profiles within three weeks and a whole search, through finalist interviews and the offer, that "should take no longer than 90 days". Finalists take a behavioral assessment. Prodigy also offers compensation studies (opens in a new tab) by location, title and experience, including salary bands and total cash compensation where available, which helps when you are pricing a role you have not filled before.

Potential fit
A team, league or live events executive search run with the founder's personal involvement

TeamWork's homepage quotes Daryl Morey, president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers: "If you have an opening large or small they will find the best person fast." Ali Towle of Kraft Sports + Entertainment writes of turning to the firm "countless times" since 2010, and former Cleveland Cavaliers CEO Len Komoroski and former NBA commissioner David Stern are also quoted. The testimonials are undated.

Buffy Filippell founded TeamWork in 1987 and describes it as the first recruiting company to focus on sports executive recruiting. The homepage says it has partnered with more than 300 organizations. Its service runs from posting coaching and role analysis through screening, reference checks and salary negotiation to follow-ups through the new hire's transition. TeamWork Online, its applicant tracking system, gives sports employers digital tools that mirror the same steps.

the Head Of The Charles Regatta search (opens in a new tab)

A June 2024 release on TurnkeyZRG's site says the firm had recently placed the commissioners of the ACC, Pac-12, Big 12 and Big Ten and the president of the NCAA. The release itself announces Tori Stevens, a former ESPN executive and CEO of SUP3R, as executive director of the Head Of The Charles Regatta after an international search the firm supported.

The firm says its people ran sports and entertainment businesses before they became recruiters, and that its placements mostly work in teams and leagues but often come from other industries. Len Perna, who founded it in 1996, leads the practice, and the firm is now part of ZRG. Its about page (opens in a new tab) describes a candidate portal and a scoring process for comparing candidates. The sports page shows recent clients' logos, among them the NFL, NBA, MLS, NASCAR and the Boston Red Sox.

Potential fit

Potential fit
An athletic director, conference or coaching search that needs to move quickly
Evidence
recent placements (opens in a new tab)

Parker's sports page lists three latest placements, each announced in a July or August 2026 news post: Eric Reveno as Brown University's men's basketball head coach, Brad Bell as head of Virginia Tech's Hokie Club fundraising, and Ron Snodgrass as national coordinator of officials for college football. Its homepage and news feed also carry Florida Atlantic University's announcement of Josh McCowan as vice president and director of athletics. The posts reproduce the institutions' own announcements.

The sports page, read in October 2026, says Parker strives to complete coach searches within 10 to 14 days and executive searches within four to five weeks, using its own candidate database. Its clients run from public and private universities to professional leagues and teams, for roles from president or commissioner to coach. Education and academic health sciences are its other practices.

Potential fit
A board, executive or commercial appointment at a club, governing body or venue, particularly in the UK

British Cycling's chief executive heads the representative assignments on PSD's sport page, alongside a stadium director at Wembley for the FA, a commercial director for the British & Irish Lions, a chief commercial officer for Ascot and an independent non-executive director for the ATP Tour. A people director at British Cycling credits PSD with the governing body's new CEO, commercial director and chairman, and Ben Calveley, CEO of the British and Irish Lions, describes the breadth of its candidates and its advice on cultural fit. The page, last updated in May 2026, does not date the assignments.

PSD works for clubs, teams, stadia and venues, governing bodies, rights holders, federations, agencies and broadcasters. It recruits for main and management boards, venue operations, commercial, digital, finance, legal and HR roles. Sport is one of several sectors the firm covers.

Potential fit
Mid to senior corporate roles at sporting goods, outdoor and athletic apparel brands
Published pricing
an upfront retainer for retained search; professional search fees largely contingent, with most of the fee due on placement; a contingency search option only for long-term clients and very specific opportunities
Evidence
a mountain bike supply chain search (opens in a new tab)

ACCUR's case studies include a retained search for a vice president of global supply chain at a private-equity-backed mountain bike maker in Carbondale, Colorado, who would build operations in Taiwan and relocate to the headquarters. ACCUR reports building a long list of 280 executives, interviewing 27 and submitting 12, of whom the client interviewed six. ACCUR says the hire came from a global supply chain and manufacturing solutions provider and had more than ten years of experience in operations, supply chain and procurement roles in aerospace and consulting. The client is unnamed, and the case was posted in 2021. On its testimonials page (opens in a new tab), an HR business partner at Implus Footcare & Fitness Accessories writes that the recruit ACCUR found plays "an integral part" in its international sales.

Its sporting goods page describes a boutique practice focused on sporting goods and the outdoor industry in the US and internationally, covering sports apparel, outdoor sports, recreational goods and sporting goods stores. Its New York and New Jersey offices serve brands based around New York, and its Miami office recruits for brands' regional offices covering Latin America and the Caribbean. Its page described retained and professional search in October 2026, with contingency recruitment available only for long-term clients and very specific opportunities. It also stated that all placements carry replacement guarantees. Across its site, ACCUR presents itself as an executive search firm for consumer and luxury goods, and its other case studies come from wine, luxury, beauty and food brands.

Ask first
how long does the replacement guarantee last, and what does it cover?

Potential fit
Executive and specialist sports hires through a firm that also recruits across other industries

Alpha Apex Group's sports page reported these figures in October 2026: 2,000+ placements worldwide and a 43-day average time to fill full-time hires. Its 72-hour figure, for new candidates reaching the hiring manager's inbox, gives no starting point or scope. The page does not identify these figures as sports measures, does not present the client logos it shows as sports work and names no sports client or case.

The page describes executive search and recruiting for sports organizations, from executive positions to on-the-field roles, with talent scouting, strategic talent acquisition and career management, and support after the placement.

Its sports and gaming page covers professionals at all levels, from video games to professional sports, and its clients page (opens in a new tab) offers references in place of testimonials. Ask for references from sports hires.

JBC calls itself a global consumer search practice. The services its clients page described in October 2026 include temporary, freelance and contract-to-hire staffing, contingent permanent search that you pay for when you hire, retained search, and payroll and outsourced recruiting programs.

It offers direct hire, executive search, contract staffing for peak seasons and events, high-volume hiring and nearshore or offshore support, with a dedicated account manager and analytics after placement. The page said in October 2026 that it could deliver qualified talent "in as little as 72 hours" once it is on your approved vendor list, and that it customizes the terms of each partnership.

The page names no sports client or case, and the case studies listed on MSH's results page (opens in a new tab) cover other industries.

How to choose a sports search firm

  1. Write down what success looks like

One thing I've found helpful in any job description, as I said on my podcast in 2022, is to "just define success for them in one sentence." Write that sentence before the first call to a search firm. It tells the firm whether the job is about revenue, a stadium project, fundraising or rebuilding a program, and it gives you a test for every candidate the firm presents.

  2. Decide how far outside your own world to look

TurnkeyZRG says its placements mostly work in teams and leagues but often come from other industries, and ACCUR's mountain bike search ended with a hire whose background was in aerospace and consulting. Ask each firm how it would search both pools and how it judges an outsider's fit with your organization.

  3. Compare timelines by the stage they end at

Prodigy's 90-day aim runs through finalist interviews and the offer. Parker's targets are for completing a search, without saying what completion means. The figures MSH and Alpha Apex Group give in hours refer to candidates arriving, not a hire. Ask each firm which stage its timeline ends at and which of your decisions can delay it.

  4. Agree the terms in writing

Compare proposals on the same points: the fee basis, when each payment is due, what happens if the hire leaves early, and who runs the search day to day. ACCUR publishes its retainer and contingency terms and a replacement guarantee, JBC describes contingent search paid on hire and SGI describes its search as retained; the other pages read do not specify a fee basis, payment schedule or replacement term.

  • Which searches like ours have you completed in the past two years, and can we speak to those clients?
  • Who will run the search day to day, and how much of it will a senior partner handle?
  • How will you keep the search confidential, and when will candidates' names be shared with our board or owners?
  • Is the search retained, contingency or a mix, and when is each payment due?
  • If the hire leaves within the first year, do you search again without a fee, give a credit, or neither?
  • When you quote a timeline, is the end point a slate of candidates, a signed contract or a start date?

How this list was made

Each firm's own sports service, client, case, process and news pages were read on October 6, 2026. A firm is listed where those pages show a recruiting service dedicated to sports organizations or sporting goods companies, and it is grouped by the organizations it serves.
