Investment Management Recruiters: 14 Firms Compared

Hiring at an asset manager or family office means trusting someone with money that belongs to clients or a family. A portfolio manager, a chief investment officer or a head of distribution shapes returns, client relationships and the firm's reputation, and the people you want may not be looking for a new job. A recruiter who works in investment management can reach them and help you judge whether their record fits your strategy.
This guide compares 14 investment management recruiters and executive search firms. It groups them by the hire they suit, shows the evidence each publishes about searches like yours, and sets out what to agree before you sign.
Compare investment management recruiters by the hire you need
Each firm's own pages show a recruiting or search service for investment management, asset management or family office roles. The list is not ranked and does not cover the whole market. The firms describe their services with terms such as "investment management", "asset management", "buy side" and "alternative investments".
The last column shows the search model or published terms where a firm names them. Keller Executive Search is the only firm that publishes a fee on the pages read on October 6, 2026. For how retained and contingent fees usually work, see what executive search firms charge.

The page was published in 2016 and last updated in 2019, so ask for recent examples.
Its testimonials page (opens in a new tab), from 2016, carries accounts signed with a first name, an initial and a role. Matthew T., CEO of an institutional asset manager, describes filling a senior portfolio manager role handling $2 billion in assets. A foundation board member says the firm recruited an endowment CIO in less than four weeks.

Its recent placements list includes a global head of equities, a risk management managing director, systematic portfolio managers and a head of portfolio finance, without client names or dates.
Founded in 2004 and based in New York, Long Ridge calls itself the industry's first recruiting specialist in alternative asset management. Beyond hedge funds it recruits for private equity, real estate and credit firms, and runs technology, legal and professional services practices.

A head of HR at a global asset management firm says it has been a client "for many years", and the logos on the page include abrdn.
The Philadelphia firm calls executive search its primary expertise and recruits at every level, from client service associates to a chief operating officer. Its employer page (opens in a new tab) sets out five steps, starting with a conversation with the hiring manager rather than HR and ending with follow-up after the placement. Across the firm it reports hundreds of candidates placed in more than 15 years.
The Oxbridge Group
Back to the comparisonThe Oxbridge Group website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Associate to principal and portfolio manager hires at a private equity firm, hedge fund or family office
Six testimonials on Oxbridge's homepage, identified by role and city, come from private equity investment professionals and from executives at a private equity platform and a portfolio company. A principal in private equity in New York writes, "You succeeded where other search firms failed." The testimonials name no firm and give no dates.
The firm recruits across the buy side: buyout, growth, venture, infrastructure and private credit funds, long/short and event-driven hedge funds, family offices, sovereign wealth and pension funds, and corporate development roles. Its focus page (opens in a new tab) lists hiring levels from pre-MBA associate to vice president, principal, director and portfolio manager, so it suits investment professionals more than C-suite searches. It cites more than 35 years of relationships.

5 of 14 firmsThese firms run investment leadership searches alongside other industries and functions. They suit a CEO, CIO, head of distribution or board appointment at an asset manager. Spencer Stuart is the only one of them to publish a count for this work on the pages read.

The page says the firm recruits executives for investment firms, asset managers and financial institutions. - Potential fit
- A CIO, senior portfolio manager or wealth leadership hire where published terms matter
- Published pricing

Keller's wealth management page lists placements by role and client type, among them a chief investment officer for a multi-family office and wealth platform, a head of alternative investments for a boutique wealth management group and a chief compliance officer. The list names no client and gives no dates.
The page describes a retained search method and publishes more terms than any other firm here. It lists an 18% client success fee, no upfront costs and no fees for candidates. Its replacement program, shown elsewhere on the page as "up to 365-day" coverage, replaces an executive who can no longer perform the role or leaves within the first year, at no additional expense. The wealth page says first candidates arrive in two to three weeks and many searches reach a shortlist within four to eight weeks. Its approach page (opens in a new tab) says instead that Keller typically presents a shortlist within two to three weeks, and that a complete search may take 30 to 60 days, or more.
- Ask first
- 18% of what, paid at which event, and how does a retained search method fit with no upfront costs and a fee called a success fee? Which shortlist estimate applies to your search?

On its wealth management page (opens in a new tab), David Langmead of Langmead Group describes a senior appointment to his family office, and John Bunch, formerly chief commercial director of Evelyn Partners, says he retained the firm for three years.
The firm says it has worked in wealth management search for more than 20 years. It can work exclusively as a client's retained search firm and then guarantees not to work with that client's competitors during the search.
Choosing between a specialist and a global search firm
Start with the hire. A hedge fund adding a portfolio manager or an asset manager adding analysts and traders needs a firm that knows where that talent sits. Long Ridge and Select Recruiting Group publish placements at that level, and Oxbridge lists hiring from associate to portfolio manager. A board choosing a chief executive or CIO for a large asset manager may want a global firm with an asset management practice, though only Spencer Stuart publishes a count for that work on the pages read. Harrison Stone sits between the two, as a specialist whose published searches include CIO and chief compliance officer roles.
Family offices sit across both worlds. A family office hiring its first CIO needs someone who understands the family as well as the portfolio; Mack and Somers specialize in that market, and Somers lists CIO mandates for family offices and investment firms.
Whatever the firm, ask for two or three searches like yours from the past few years and talk to the clients. Some of the proof pages above date from 2016 to 2019, and firm-wide counts say little about your role.
How to run the search
Write down what success looks like at 90 days
Before I'd call any of these firms, I'd write down what the new hire must have achieved 90 days after they start: the mandate, the people they work with and what they own. In a 2020 episode of my podcast I called this the "what is success at 90 days" document, and suggested writing it before you make the hire. It turns a vague brief into criteria the recruiter and your interview panel can use.
Brief two or three firms on the same role
Give each firm the same written brief: the strategy or function, the reporting line, compensation range, location and any non-compete or garden leave constraints. Ask how many comparable searches each has completed and who would run yours.
Get the terms in writing before the search starts
Agree the fee base, when each payment is due, whether the search is retained or contingent, what happens if the hire leaves early, and which stage any promised timeline ends at: first candidates, shortlist, offer or start date.
Check references with the firm's past clients
Ask for client references from searches like yours and call them. A testimonial on a website is a starting point; a conversation with a client who hired a portfolio manager or CIO through the firm tells you more.
Questions to ask on the first call
- Which investment searches like ours have you completed in the last three years, and can we speak to those clients?
- Who will run the search day to day, and how many other searches will they carry?
- Is the search retained or contingent, what is the fee based on, and when is each part due?
- What happens if the person leaves or does not work out in the first year?
- When will we see the first candidates, and when the shortlist?
- Which firms are off limits to you because they are clients?
- How will you assess the candidate's investment record, not just their résumé?
Before you sign, could you name a client of the firm who has made a hire like yours, and have you spoken to them?
Sources and method
How this list was made
The firms' service, client, case and process pages were read on October 6, 2026, starting from the firms in the original list. A firm is listed where those pages show a recruiting or search service for investment management, asset management or family office roles, whether or not it publishes proof. Figures, client names and terms are the firms' own published claims; fees and guarantees appear only where a firm publishes them.
