Venture Capital Recruiters: 8 Search Firms Compared

Published Updated 10 min read
Hiring for a venture capital firm means choosing who will find, judge and support its investments. An associate who sources deals, a partner who leads a fund or an investor relations head who keeps limited partners close shapes what the firm can do for years. Portfolio companies face a similar decision when they need a CTO or a head of product.
This guide compares eight recruiters and executive search firms for venture capital teams and portfolio-company leaders. It groups them by the hire they suit, shows the evidence each publishes and lists what to settle before you sign.
DisclosureJake Jorgovan co-founded Alpha Apex Group, one of the eight firms in this list.
Which kind of firm fits the hire?
The eight firms fall into three groups. Two specialize in investment professionals, from associate to general partner. Three are executive search firms with a venture capital practice or service page that covers the fund and its portfolio companies. Three are technology search firms that recruit leaders for venture-backed companies, with different functional coverage.
A firm is listed where its own pages give current evidence of recruiting for venture capital firms or venture-backed companies: a practice page, a role list, or a published placement or client. The list is not ranked and does not cover every firm in this market. No firm here publishes a fee for venture capital searches on the pages read on October 6, 2026; the executive search fee guide explains the usual structures.

Specialists in investment professionals
2 of 8 firmsThese firms recruit the people who make investments: associates, principals, partners and general partners. Glocap also fills roles that support the investment team, such as investor relations and operations.
Glocap
Back to the comparisonGlocap website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- An associate, principal or senior investment hire at a venture or growth equity firm
- Evidence
- its investment professional practice (opens in a new tab)
Two of the recent placements on Glocap's homepage are at venture firms: a senior associate for a "10bn+ Venture/Growth Firm", with investment banking and early-stage investing experience, and an associate-level investor for a "2bn+ VC Firm focused on digital health/services". The list names no firm and gives no dates.
Investment professional recruiting is the practice Glocap started with in 1997 and still calls its "signature practice". Venture capital and growth equity is one of its specialized practices, which recruit at all levels, from the most junior to the most senior. The firm says most of its recruiters have done the jobs they recruit for. It also recruits for fundraising and investor relations, accounting and operations, and administrative roles. Its Glocap Tech division, started in 2023, focuses on engineering, data science, AI and software professionals for its core clients and their portfolio companies.
SCGC website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A venture or growth equity investor, from associate to general partner, especially a technically trained one
The testimonials on SCGC's homepage come from investors, named by title and fund type only. A partner at an enterprise VC firm says the fund came back to SCGC for a second search after the first. A partner at a deep tech VC firm says SCGC found a candidate "that other venture search firms we had worked with had been simply unable to find". The others are a general partner at an enterprise VC firm, a partner at an energy and infrastructure growth equity fund and the founder of a $15b crossover fund. None is dated.
SCGC describes itself as primarily focused on placing venture capital and growth equity investment professionals, for investment roles from seed through pre-IPO stage. Its venture recruiting targets candidates with engineering, product, founder or doctoral backgrounds. Its about page (opens in a new tab) says the business became a search firm in 2016, and the site lists San Francisco and New York City.
Executive search firms that recruit for venture capital
3 of 8 firmsThese firms recruit senior leaders for the fund itself and for its portfolio companies, alongside searches in many other sectors.
Alpha Apex Group
Back to the comparisonCo-founded by Jake Jorgovan, the author
Alpha Apex Group website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- Senior investment, fund operations or portfolio leadership hires through a firm that also recruits other executive roles
Alpha Apex Group's venture capital page reported firm-wide figures in October 2026: 2,000+ placements worldwide and a 43-day average time to fill full-time hires, without saying which milestone ends that measure. A third claim, that new candidates reach the hiring manager's inbox within 72 hours, has no stated starting point or scope. The page does not identify these figures as venture capital measures and names no venture capital client or case.
The page describes searches for leaders in investment strategy, fund management and investor relations, and for executives who support portfolio companies. It says each search is tailored to the firm's investment focus and culture, and assesses investment judgment alongside operational and leadership experience.
Caldwell
Back to the comparisonCaldwell website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A senior leader for the fund or a portfolio company from a global search firm with a combined private equity and venture capital practice
- Evidence
- a client review from a venture capital firm (opens in a new tab)
On Caldwell's client reviews page, a managing director at a venture capital firm says the team "found a group of candidates that I am certain will enhance the prospects for this business" and explained to candidates what it means to work in a venture stage company. The review names neither the firm nor the role and gives no date for the search. On the same page, a vice president of brand and communications at an American venture capital firm describes the search from the candidate's side.
Caldwell's private equity and venture capital practice recruits leaders for both the fund and its portfolio companies. The firm says its practice partners bring domain knowledge, search experience and operating experience, and that private equity and venture capital firms have counted on it "for half a century". Its venture capital section addresses leadership for venture firms and their portfolio start-ups. Private equity takes up more of the page than venture capital.
SPMB website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A partner, principal or functional executive at an institutional or corporate venture firm
- Evidence
- its investment practice client list (opens in a new tab)
8VC, Battery Ventures, General Catalyst, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed and NFX are among the venture firms whose logos appear on SPMB's investment practice client list, alongside private equity and asset management firms. The list does not say which roles SPMB filled for each client or when.
Its venture capital page says the practice partners with institutional and corporate venture capital firms to recruit investment and functional talent, from early-stage funds to multi-stage platforms. It describes supporting the formation of new venture teams and the evolution of corporate venture arms. The firm's investors page (opens in a new tab) names the levels it places, from general partners and managing directors to partners and principals, and search teams in San Francisco, New York, Denver and Los Angeles.
Technology search firms for portfolio leadership
3 of 8 firmsConsider these firms when a portfolio company needs a leader, not when the fund needs an investor. Common Agenda covers commercial and other leadership at technology companies, Daversa's consultants build executive teams for venture-backed technology companies, and Riviera concentrates on technical and product leaders.
Common Agenda
Back to the comparisonCommon Agenda website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A marketing, sales or other leadership hire at a technology portfolio company
- Evidence
- client testimonials on its service page (opens in a new tab)
Greg Daily says Common Agenda recruited his VP of marketing at Pedestal Networks, whose board included "some of the top VC's in Silicon Valley known for having extremely high expectations". The testimonial was posted in November 2023 and does not say when the search took place. A sales leader who has held vice president roles at VC-funded startups also recommends the firm.
Common Agenda has served the technology industry and nonprofit associations since 1997, for clients from growing startups to Fortune 500 companies. It assigns a team of researchers to each search and maps target companies before sourcing candidates. Its published evidence concerns company leadership; its pages read do not describe recruiting investment professionals for venture firms.
Daversa
Back to the comparisonDaversa website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A CEO, go-to-market or other executive hire at a venture-backed technology company
Daversa's work page (opens in a new tab) lists clients including OpenAI, Scale AI, Databricks and Cursor, without roles or dates. Its homepage carries an item dated October 15, 2024, "Building The Leadership Team at OpenAI", which links to a news report.
The firm's team page (opens in a new tab) describes consultants who work with venture-backed companies: one partner leads leadership placements for venture-backed and growth-stage software companies, and a director works mainly with private, venture-backed enterprise technology companies on go-to-market teams. The pages read do not describe a practice for venture capital firms themselves.
Riviera Partners
Back to the comparisonRiviera Partners website, captured October 2026.
- Potential fit
- A CTO, head of engineering, product, AI or security leader at a venture-backed company
Riviera's venture page lists a CTO placement for Faire at Series E and a VP of product placement for ConvertKit at seed stage. Partners at Polaris Partners, Index Ventures and Foundation Capital give testimonials on the same page. Gary Swart, a general partner at Polaris Partners, calls Riviera "a trusted partner for Polaris Partners portfolio companies", and the page reports 105+ placements across Polaris's portfolio and 145+ across Index Ventures'.
Riviera specializes in executive search for product, software engineering, IT, AI, machine learning and data, cybersecurity and design leaders, from startups to public companies. The pages read do not describe recruiting investment professionals for venture firms.
Start the search before the need is urgent
In my own business, the hires that failed had something in common. As I wrote in my December 2023 essay on preparing for growth, "Every bad hire I made came from being in a desperate spot and not having enough applicants to choose from." I took the best of a short list of people who could start on a rushed timeline, and those were the hires that didn't work out.
Look ahead for the hires you can predict: a new fund that will need another investor, a partner planning to step back, a portfolio company whose founder will need a CTO after the next round. Brief a recruiter while there is still time to see a full slate, and set the timeline before you need the person in the seat.
What to settle before you sign
Write down what the role must deliver
Name the stage and sectors the person will cover, whether they will source deals, lead them or support the fund, and what success looks like after the first year. An associate who builds the pipeline is a different search from a partner who will sit on boards and raise the next fund. For a portfolio company's leadership, compare CTO executive search firms; for buyout firms, private equity executive search firms.
Ask for evidence from searches like yours
Request references from venture firms or portfolio companies that hired for a comparable role, sector and stage. Several testimonials on these sites give a title instead of a client, and the placement lists do not date each placement. A reference call is where you learn how a recent search went and why candidates said no.
Agree the terms in writing
Compare proposals on the same points: the fee basis, when each payment is due, what happens if the hire leaves early, which firms or portfolio companies the recruiter will not approach, and whether a quoted timeline ends at a shortlist, an accepted offer or a start date.
- Which comparable searches has the person running ours completed in the past two years, for venture firms or portfolio companies?
- How will you source candidates, assess the judgment and experience this role requires, evaluate fit with our strategy, and make sure the slate is diverse?
- Is the search retained or contingency, and does carried interest count toward the fee?
- Which payments fall due at which stage, and can any of them be refunded?
- If the hire leaves early, do you repeat the search, offer a credit or neither, and for how long does that promise last?
- Which of your other clients are off limits for candidates, and does that include their portfolio companies?
- How will you keep the search confidential from our portfolio and co-investors?

How this list was made
Each firm's own service, client, testimonial and process pages were read on October 6, 2026. A firm is listed where its own pages give current evidence of recruiting for venture capital firms or venture-backed companies (a practice page, a role list, or a published placement or client), and grouped by the hire it suits. Placements, clients and figures are the firms' own published claims.
