Leadership Consultants and Executive Coaching Firms: 15 Compared

Published Updated 15 min read
Leadership consultants and coaches are usually hired at a turning point. A new CEO takes over, a senior team stops agreeing on what matters most, or a group of managers has to lead at a bigger scale than before. An outside partner can help those leaders see what they are missing and change how they work, but the firms that offer this help differ a great deal in what they do and in the evidence they can show.
This guide compares 15 firms that offer leadership consulting, executive coaching and leadership development programs. It groups them by the kind of firm they are, shows the client evidence each one publishes and covers what to agree before you sign.
DisclosureJake Jorgovan co-founded Alpha Apex Group, one of the fifteen firms in this list.
Compare leadership consulting and coaching firms
Each firm's own site has a page dedicated to leadership development, executive coaching or leadership consulting. Three kinds of firm do this work: specialists in coaching and leadership development, executive search firms that run a leadership consulting practice beside search, and management or people consulting firms. A firm in one group may also do the work of another, so the groups show the kind of practice each firm's leadership work sits in. The list is not a ranking and does not cover the whole market.
Only one firm publishes a price on the pages read on October 7, 2026: the Center for Creative Leadership, for its open-enrollment program. The last column gives a published price or engagement length where a firm states one.

Alpha Apex Group website, captured October 2026.

It names no clients and gives no project count or baseline.
The work combines one-to-one executive coaching with peer mentoring inside the team and agreement on decision rights and escalation, with a first snapshot for the CEO in 30 to 60 days. Alpha Apex Group is also an executive search firm; this work sits in its people and culture consulting practice. It also describes a North American retailer whose store transformation combined leadership development with changes to roles and communication; BCG reports that employee engagement more than doubled and market share rose more than 200 basis points in a year. Both clients are unnamed.
BCG's executive coaches are former C-suite executives, it says. Typical one-to-one and leadership team coaching engagements last six months and run alongside a wider change effort.
One leader, a top team or a layer of managers?
Several firms above describe all three kinds of work, but the engagements look different, and so does the evidence worth asking for.
- One executive. A new CEO, a newly promoted leader or a senior person whose habits hold a team back usually needs one-to-one coaching. AIIR publishes six-to-nine-month and 12-month coaching programs, plus a separate three-to-four-month assessment and feedback option, BCG says its typical engagement lasts six months, and Heidrick's case ran for two years.
- A top team. A team that cannot agree on priorities needs an assessment of each member, facilitated working sessions and agreed rules for decisions. Alpha Apex Group, BCG, Heidrick, N2Growth and Spencer Stuart all describe this work.
- A layer of managers. Developing many leaders at once calls for a cohort program, such as CCL's work with Securitas, AIIR's program for 25 vice presidents or DDI's with GE HealthCare.
If the problem is the person in the role and not their development, a search may be the better answer. The guide to choosing an executive search firm covers that decision.
What makes a coach worth hiring
In June 2022, talking on my podcast about how growth keeps creating new problems, I said I worked with a business adviser and coach, Anthony Tombolio. I described one of my favorite things to do with an adviser: "what am I not thinking about? Like, what am I forgetting? Like, what challenges am I going to come up against?" My advice was to find "someone who's ahead of you on the game that can help warn you of these things."
That is the test I'd apply to a coach for a senior leader. Credentials and a method matter, but the coach should have been further down the road than the person being coached, and the sessions should be the place to raise questions no one inside the company will ask. Several firms here say their coaches have held senior roles, among them BCG, Heidrick, Aspen and Alpha Apex Group. Meet the coach, not only the firm, and agree how to switch if the fit is wrong, as two executives did in Heidrick's case.
What to settle before you sign
Name the change you want to see
Write down what should be different in six to twelve months and who will notice: the leader's manager, the board or the team. Agree at the start how progress will be measured, for example a 360-degree review before and after, engagement scores or how quickly decisions are made.
Ask for evidence from engagements like yours
Ask for references from clients with the same kind of need: one executive, a top team or a group of managers, in a company of your size. Testimonials on a firm's site show what it chose to publish; a reference call lets you ask what did not work.
Agree the scope and the fee in writing
Only CCL publishes a price on the pages read. Ask for a proposal that states the number of sessions or workshops, the length, the assessments included, who sees the results and how the fee is billed.
- Who will coach or lead the work, what senior roles have they held, and how can we check their coach training and credentials?
- What will you change in your standard program for our situation?
- Can we meet the coach before we commit, and switch if the fit is wrong?
- Which engagements like ours have you run in the past two years, and can we speak to one of those clients?
- How will progress be measured, and when will we see the first results?
- How long is the engagement, what does it cost, and how is the fee billed?
- Who sees the assessment results and the coaching notes: the leader, their manager or HR?
- What support continues after the engagement ends, and what does it cost?
